Kohli was born and raised in Delhi to a Punjabi Khatri Hindu family. His father, Prem Kohli, worked as a criminal lawyer, and his mother, Saroj Kohli, is a housewife. Kohli's first-class debut was in 2006 for Delhi against Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy. He was only 18 at the time. He then made his List A debut that same year in the Deodhar Trophy. He played for the India Under-19 team at the 2008 Under-19 World Cup held in Malaysia. In the same year, he was signed by the Royal Challengers Bangalore for the Indian Premier League (IPL). Kohli was then selected to play for the Indian national team in an ODI match against Sri Lanka in August 2008.

In 2010, Kohli scored his first ODI century against Sri Lanka in Kolkata. He was later selected for the 2011 World Cup held in India, where he played a crucial role in India's victory. Kohli was then made the vice-captain of the ODI team in 2012, and he captained the Indian team for the first time in 2014 in a series against Sri Lanka.

Kohli's Test debut came in 2011 against the West Indies, and he scored his first Test century the following year against Australia in Adelaide. In 2014, he was made the Test vice-captain, and he took over the captaincy in 2014 when MS Dhoni retired from Test cricket. Kohli became the full-time Test captain in 2015, and he led India to their first series win in Sri Lanka in 22 years.

Kohli has played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL since 2008, and he was made the captain of the team in 2013. He has been one of the most successful batsmen in the tournament, and he has led his team to the final on several occasions.

In 2019, Kohli became the fastest player to score 11,000 runs in ODI cricket, and he also became the first player to score 20,000 international runs in a single decade. In 2017, Kohli married Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma in a private ceremony in Tuscany, Italy. The couple has a daughter named Vamika, who was born in January 2021.
