The Tale of Tola and the Talking Drum
From Procrastination to Productivity Powerhouse

Tola was a master procrastinator. It wasn't a title she proudly displayed, but it clung to her like the Lagos humidity on a rainy day. Deadlines loomed like angry storm clouds, and Tola, bless her heart, was the proverbial grasshopper basking in the sun while the industrious ants (read: everyone else) diligently worked.
School was a constant battle. Tola possessed a brilliant mind, but her love affair with "I'll do it tomorrow" often resulted in all-nighters fueled by strong coffee and frantic scribbling. Exams were a nerve-wracking gamble, and success was a fleeting victory overshadowed by the looming guilt of last-minute cramming.
One scorching Saturday afternoon, Tola found herself sprawled on a woven mat under the shade of a giant mango tree in her grandmother's compound. The rhythmic beat of a talking drum wafted through the air, a familiar melody that carried the stories of their ancestors. As the drummer, Uncle Ayo, a wiry man with laughter lines etched around his eyes, finished his performance, Tola sighed dramatically.
"Still haven't started on that market research project, eh?" Uncle Ayo chuckled, his voice warm and knowing.
Tola slumped further onto the mat. "How did you know?" she mumbled.
Uncle Ayo sat beside her, the old drum resting against his leg. "The talking drum speaks of many things, Tola," he said, "including the whispers of procrastination." He pointed to the drum's intricate carvings. "See these symbols? They tell stories of hard work, planning, and the importance of seizing the day."
Tola squinted at the symbols, a spark of curiosity igniting within her. "But Uncle Ayo," she argued, "what's the point of starting something early if you can just do it all at the last minute and still get a good grade?"
Uncle Ayo tapped the drum softly. "Ah, Tola," he smiled, "the talking drum says there's more to life than just grades. There's the satisfaction of accomplishment, the joy of learning, and the freedom that comes from being prepared." He tapped the drum faster now, a beat that echoed with urgency. "Procrastination steals all of this, Tola. It leaves you stressed, anxious, and ultimately, unfulfilled."
His words struck a chord within Tola. She thought about the countless nights spent hunched over books, the constant feeling of being behind, and the joy of learning replaced by a frantic scramble to meet deadlines.
"So, what do I do?" she asked, a flicker of determination in her eyes.
Uncle Ayo's smile widened. "The talking drum tells me you already know the answer, Tola. You just need to listen."
The next day, Tola woke up with a newfound resolve. She created a daily schedule, dedicating specific times for working on her project. At first, it was a struggle. The familiar urge to procrastinate lurked like a shadow, whispering sweet nothings about the joys of Netflix and endless scrolling. But Tola persevered, fueled by the image of the talking drum and the stories of hard work etched onto its surface.
As the days turned into weeks, a sense of accomplishment bloomed within her. She learned to enjoy the quiet focus of dedicated work time, the satisfaction of completing tasks one by one. The "I'll do it tomorrow" whispers grew fainter, replaced by the confident drumbeat of progress.
When the deadline finally arrived, Tola wasn't scrambling. Her research project was complete, well-organized, and brimming with insights. The presentation went smoothly, her confidence radiating outwards. Tola received an excellent grade, but the true reward was something far greater - the feeling of having conquered her procrastination and discovered the power of self-discipline.
From then on, Tola carried the lessons of the talking drum with her. Procrastination never truly vanished, but it no longer held the reins of her life. She learned to prioritize her tasks, to break down large projects into manageable steps, and to find joy in the process of learning and creating.
Years later, as a successful entrepreneur running her own business, Tola often found herself surrounded by young people struggling with the same affliction she once had. She'd share her story, her voice a testament to the power of overcoming procrastination. And as she spoke, she'd glimpse the familiar spark of determination in their eyes, a silent promise to silence the whispers of "tomorrow," and embrace the empowering rhythm of "today."
