fortunate enough to have gratitude

I used to take my gratitude for granted. My parents provided a safe and nuturing enviroment for me and my two siblings at home growing up. It is now that I can appreciate the lengths that they went to and everything that they were patient with for putting up with my shenanigans.

I was two people growing up; who I was at home and who I became once outside of it. At home, I did my school work, played with legos and watched cartoons. Outside of it, I was a troublemaker and nuicance to the community; I would terrorize and shoplift from local businesses, trash and damage private and public properties with glass bottles and taking the emblems of cars, and instigate confrontations with the various groups that also would roam the streets at all hours.

No matter what the situation I would put myself in, I knew that I could retreat to the safety and comfort of my patents home only to go back out later and do it all over again the next chance I got. In the process, thinking about it now, I feel that is the time when I developed and became accustomed to certain behaviors and habits that still to this day impact my decisions.

I brought that up to bring this up. Right now I have been fortunate enough to be blessed to be taken into a transitional recovery house which is the Philip House. I need to be here right now. I was unable to manage my life before.

This covid-19 virus is having a huge impact on the world today affecting many aspects of human life. The individuals who are in a recovery setting now are subjected to a much harsher struggle with the diminishing medical resources, supplies, and support. This is especially true for the people who are the survivors of the recent opiod epidemic. The time they finally chose to ask for help, their recovery is being hindered by affording them the necessary time to heal.

Recovering addicts are the most vulnerable right in the beginning because of the adjustments their bodies and minds have to make. Yes, they made the descion on their own to part take in these poisons, but their lives still have value. It should be made aware and recognized for their efforts to want to get well and the obstacles that they have faced and overcame to make it to get to that point.

I would like to believe that if anything that the current world situation combined with mine would only challenge me to make the required necessay changes and strides to salvage a life out of the wreckage that I have created. Right now, I find that my movements and oppurtunitie are limited to the basic essentials. Regardless, I remain focused, vigilant, and maintain a positive attitude. I keep faith that during this unknown period of time that I will only prosper and flourish physically, mentally, and spiritually.

In conclusion, when faced with uncertainty, we as human beings cannot forget where we came from to get where we find outselves today. We are all survivors and the purpose of life is to survive it. Nothing good comes easy and doing the right thing is better than doing something the right way. People can be evil the right way but if they do the right thing they cannot be evil. We all need to step up and higher our standards now more than ever to help one another. It is the right thing.
