The reason we change

Change is an integral part of human life

When you reach a certain age, you are going to notice people change around you. Whether it's friends who don’t speak to you anymore, or it's relatives who only care about what you can give them. It might even be yourself without realizing, you will change from the person you once were and some people might tell you that.

Since I left college, I’ve drifted away from a lot of my friends, for the most part we don’t talk anymore, with the rest we try to keep in touch from time to time and I have already had some people tell me I changed, I am no longer the person I use to be.

From my point of view I don’t think I’ve changed, nothing feels different to me. I am the same old guy who loves computers, a little shy, if anything has changed that will be my age, I have just grown older. However, this doesn’t come as a surprise to me, and in this article we are going to look at the reasons why.

The Pursuit of Growth

One of the primary reasons we change is the pursuit of growth and personal development. As humans, we have an innate desire to learn, evolve, and to better ourselves. We strive for personal development, by seeking to acquire new skills, knowledge, and experiences. This drive for growth often requires change, in our way of doing things, thinking and even interacting with other people. For you to be the same after so many years will require a deliberate effort from you to stay the same.

Adaptation to Circumstances

Change is often a response to shifting circumstances, whether you choose to stay the same or not doesn’t stop other circumstances from changing. The environment in which you are found is constantly changing and this will also induce a change in you directly or indirectly. Whether it’s a change in our personal lives, like a new job or relationship, or larger societal changes, our ability to adapt and change is crucial for survival and success.

Pursuit of Happiness

This is a constant pursuit we are all after, which requires a certain amount of change. Staying the same would mean trying to maintain our current status of happiness, which isn’t possible or even desirable. We always want more happiness and even the happiness we have already is always depreciating, so that's why we change in order to acquire more happiness. For example, you change your way of acting to be more positive, your habits, etc

Learning from Mistakes

Mistakes and failures are often catalysts for change. When we make a mistake, we’re presented with an opportunity to learn and grow from them. Recognizing our errors and making a conscious effort to change helps us avoid repeating the same mistakes in the future. When you strive to stay the same then that implies you want to keep making the same mistakes or reliving the same realities.

Influence of Others

Finally, even in spite of your personal willpower, the people all around you can induce change in you. We aren’t stuck in a vacuum, we live in an environment and the actions of others does have an impact on us and vice versa, this means that whether you like it or not, you are bound to change and evolve to something different due to the effects of the environment on you and the effects you have on the environment.

Conclusion

Change is an integral part of human life. It’s a reflection of our desire for growth, our ability to adapt, our pursuit of happiness, our capacity to learn from mistakes, and the influence of others. Embracing change, therefore, is embracing the very essence of being human.
