Introduction

September gets its name from septem, the Latin word for seven. It earned this name because it was the seventh month in the original ancient Roman calendar, which began the year in March.

• Ten original months: The early Roman year started in March and had only 10 named months, leaving winter unnamed.

• Numerical names: Months from the fifth onward were named for their number: Quintilis (fifth), Sextilis (sixth), September (seventh), October (eighth), November (ninth), and December (tenth). [1, 2]

• Adding January and February: Later calendar reforms added January and February to the start of the year.

• Keeping the old name: This shift moved September to the ninth position on the calendar, but the Romans kept its original numerical name.

A lot of creators and friends have shown their support for these challenges so I won't let them down.

Every month, we set prompts in the Vocal Social Society. We offer a $1 tip to five random creators who take part, asking them to share their stories in the comments and on the group thread.

This is not official, and usually after each one, I say that's it, and I always think people have had enough of me, but people tell me how much they look forward to my challenges, so I will keep doing them as long as I get responses.

• September 11 is Patriot Day, held in honor and remembrance of those who died in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

• September 11 also starts Rosh Hashanah, a Jewish holiday that marks the beginning of the new year.

• September 13 is Grandparents Day this year. Honor your grandparents today—and every day!

• September 13: Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day

• September 17 is Constitution Day. This day celebrates the adoption of the U.S. Constitution, which occurred on September 17, 1787

• September 19: International Talk Like a Pirate Day

• September 20 marks the start of Yom Kippur at sundown.

• September 21 is recognized as the annual International Day of Peace. Observances range from a moment of silence at noon to events such as peace walks, concerts, and volunteering in the community.

• September 22 marks the start of fall! This year’s Autumnal Equinox occurs at 8:05 P.M. EDT. On this date, there are approximately equal hours of daylight and darkness.

• September 24: National Punctuation Day

• September 29 is Michaelmas. Michaelmas is an ancient Celtic “Quarter Day” which marked the end of the harvesting season and was steeped in folklore.
