The Day I Stopped Waiting to Feel Ready
I Was Waiting for Permission That Was Never Coming

I used to have a list.
A long, carefully maintained list of everything I needed to do, learn, save, and become before I could start. It was dressed up as responsibility. As wisdom. As not rushing into things unprepared. But if I am honest with myself, it was fear with better handwriting.
The list included things like: learn more about the topic first. Save a little more money. Feel more confident. Have a clearer plan. Wait until the children are older. Wait until things are calmer at work. Wait until the timing feels right.
That list kept growing. And nothing on it ever got crossed off — because the goalposts kept moving. Every time I got close to one condition, I invented a new one. Every time I felt almost ready, I discovered a new reason why almost wasn't quite enough.
This went on for longer than I am comfortable admitting.
Then one evening, I was scrolling through my phone and I came across someone who had started exactly where I was. Same kind of idea. Same kind of doubts. Same kind of ordinary life with no special advantages. But they had started six months ago, and now they were sharing real, documented, undeniable results.
I felt something shift inside me.
It wasn't jealousy exactly — though there was a small sharp edge of that. It was more like a wake-up call arriving in a form I couldn't argue with. This person was not smarter than me. They were not more qualified. They did not have more time in the day. The only thing they had that I didn't was a start date.
I closed the app. I opened a blank document. And I started.
Not with a full plan. Not with all the answers. Not feeling ready — because that feeling never came and I finally accepted it never would. I started with what I had, where I was, with the knowledge I had accumulated while waiting to feel like I had enough of it.
That rough, imperfect start became something real. Something I finished. Something I put out into the world.
And the world did not laugh. It did not ignore me. It responded.
Not immediately. Not dramatically. But genuinely. People found what I created. Some of them told me it helped them. Some of them paid for it. Some of them shared it with others.
None of that would have happened if I had kept adding to the list.
Here is what I now know about readiness: it is a myth. Not a helpful guideline or a useful checkpoint — a myth. A story your fear invented and your brain adopted because staying still feels safer than moving forward into the unknown.
The truth is that you do not become ready by waiting. You become ready by doing. The confidence comes from the action, not before it. The clarity comes from the attempt, not from the planning. The skill comes from the practice, not from the preparation alone.
I have spoken to many people since then who were waiting for the same elusive feeling of readiness. And in almost every case, what they needed was not more time to prepare — it was permission to begin imperfectly. Consider this your permission.
Whatever you have been putting off — the business, the book, the application, the conversation, the change — today is the day. Not Monday. Not next month. Not when everything lines up perfectly. Today.
Because the version of you who has been waiting is already capable. Already equipped. Enough already.
The list will never be finished. But your dream does not have to wait for it.
