“Things are what they are, and whatever will be, will be.” - Jonas Jonasson

Written by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans in 1955, was a song that was made famous by American singer and actress, the late Doris Day, called "Que Sera, Sera". Day would perform the song in the 1956 Alfred Hitchcock film "The Man Who Knew Too Much", and such was the popularity of the song from the film, it was subsequently studio recorded, and peaked as high as number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the USA, whilst going all the way to number 1 in the UK. The lyrics basically point to the progression through the life of the narrator, starting from childhood, to young adulthood, to falling in love, and then to parenthood, with each stage of life posing the question of what one can expect for their future ahead. Each time the question is asked, the same reply is given, being that whatever will be, will be. There are six words that are repeated as part of the chorus that hold great importance and truth, and those words are: "the future's not ours to see". As much as it would be lovely to time travel, and gain some insight into various answers about what the future holds for us, such as what age we will pass away, what will we end up achieving in our life, and what joys, sorrows, triumphs, and tragedies will we encounter, unfortunately we aren't privileged in obtaining such information. Who knows what lies ahead in the future for us? It's a question that can certainly fill one with a range of different emotions, such as anxiety, stress, concern, hope, encouragement, doubt, fear, and uncertainty. There's one good thing about the future though, and that is that we can shape it. We may not know what's ahead for us, but we do have the power to design it in a manner we desire. Unlike the past, the future does offer hope, promise, encouragement, and possibility for us. We cannot change the past, and all that we have done, whether right or wrong, as it is now etched in the pages of history. If you're actually human, there will undoubtedly be moments, decisions, and actions that you would so desperately love to take back, because you know now they were bad choices, or complete errors of judgement. We can dwell on these for as long as we want, however it's not going to get us anywhere. It's not at all beneficial for us, and in fact, it is greatly hurting us, and our mindset. We cannot change the past, so why spend precious energy and emotion on something we have no control over? So, we therefore need to alter our focus!

The future. That is what we have the ability to control, that is what we have the ability to shape, that is what we have the ability to design. We may not know what will be, or exactly how life will pan out for us, as life will always throw curveballs, adversities, challenges, and surprises our way, and we get thrown off course, but we can at least establish an action plan for ourselves, and be setting the direction in which we would like our life to be heading towards. We can be establishing the goals we wish to achieve, and be working towards creating a future that is enriched with happiness, success, satisfaction, fulfillment, and prosperity. Our future is in our control as we speak. It's the decisions and actions of our present that will determine our future, just our decisions and actions of the past have led us to where we are today. Not happy about that? Then use your past as experience and education, not as punishment! Sure, certain plans may not turn out the way we plan or anticipate, but if we continue to focus on our goals and the life we desire, have an ongoing commitment in working towards achieving them, possess a resilient and perseverant attitude, and remain patient in obtaining them, we can indeed create a wonderful future for ourselves. The key message in the lyrics of this song is that we shouldn't focus on whatever situations and circumstances we physically cannot change or control, because it's when we do, we find ourselves feeling those negative emotions of stress, concern, anxiety, worry, and doubt. That leads to a negative mindset, and a negative mindset leads to negative results. As humans, we have a bad habit of assuming that the worst will happen, and it's these assumptions that destroy us mentally. A lot of the time, such assumptions are just that, what might happen, but not what will definitely happen. Sometimes it does work out as a worst case scenario, yet we still draw on our abilities to problem solve, and then we ultimately devise a solution. It's by no means a pleasant time, but we find a way to get through it, and life goes on. We are more resilient than we give ourselves credit for. Most of the time though, circumstances don't pan out anywhere near as bad as we anticipated, meaning we spent a whole heap of energy and emotion worrying about nothing. It's why we are better to have awareness of it, but not focus on it. What counts is what you do today, what you do now, and what you can actually control now! Control what you can control, change what can be changed, and remain focused on and committed to achieving your goals, that's all you can do. As far as whatever else happens in the future, that you cannot change or control, well......que sera, sera.
