New Years Resolutions: Cart before the horse

Normalize Past Years’s Resolutions

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS — are in my opinion putting the cart before the horse. Putting the cart before the horse is an expression that means, doing things in the wrong order.

“To put the world in order, we must first put the nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must first put the family in order; to put the family in order; we must first cultivate our personal life; we must first set our hearts right.”

-Confucius

At the start of each year everyone has New Year RESOLUTIONS. What exactly is a resolution? Well by definition a New Year’s resolution is “a firm decision to do or not to do something”.

“There must be a few times in life when you stand at a precipice of a decision. When you know there will forever be a Before and an After... I knew there would be no turning back if I designated this moment as my own Prime Meridian from which everything else would be measured.”

-Justina Chen Headley

However, there is another definition of resolution. Which is “the action of solving a problem, dispute, or contentious matter”.

“Life is divided into three terms — that which was, which is, and which will be. Let us learn from the past to profit by the present, and from the present, to live better in the future.”

-William Wordsworth

In my opinion this definition should be normalized as Past Year’s resolutions. Before focusing on what you want in or out of the next year, we should focus on what we’ve gained or learned from the past year.

“Perhaps that is where our choice lies—in determining how we will meet the inevitable end of things, and how we will greet each new beginning.”

-Elana K. Arnold

With that being said, I think this past year, the year 2020 has had a lot of topics where improvement is needed. One in which being in the forefront for everyone everywhere. The importance of relationships.

“Learn from the past, set vivid, detailed goals for the future, and live in the only moment of time over which you have any control: now.”

-Denis Waitley

So with 10 weeks left in the year 2020, I want to do a 10-week series. I will bring focus to the top 10 issues within relationships that we all experience in one way or another. Within each category I will break down each issue as it pertains to each type of relationship: personal, intimate, kinship, business and platonic relationships.

“If everyone just accepted you the way you are, then, probably, you'd still be the way you were. So for anyone who didn't accept you at one point, just give 'em a smile in your heart and say, Thank You!”

-Ufuoma Apoki

So join me, let’s approach the end of 2020 with resolutions of this year before we start on the resolutions of the year ahead! Relationships are very important aspects of life, of which we all can grow from and into for the new year! 10 weeks, 10 issues, 10 post, one post every week as we bring 2020 to a close! I'm excited to dive in and I hope you are too!

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

-Mark Twain
