Nobody Likes Mondays

Monday mornings are not welcomed with open hearts and arms. Most people dread Monday. I wrote this short article as a quick pick me up. I understand we live in a drive-through same-day delivery society and we never have time for anything unless we lose track of time scrolling, or we’re watching Netflix. One of my jobs is doing three-minute surveys, and they spend two minutes explaining to me they don’t have time.

Mondays in 2020 have brought a new meaning to grief. It’s been a hell of a year and we may never see normal again. Life has become a virtual apocalyptic series and we are all hoping season two takes a turn for the better, but deep down we already know how things play out. For better or for worse, the rent or mortgage is still due along with the internet and cell phone bill. Internet is no longer a commodity but a basic human right. We have had to adjust our daily routines and embrace what we thought would only be temporary as a new way of life.

A lot of people, myself included, do not follow the Monday through Friday work routine. Whether you are a weekday warrior or not, Monday still comes with its infamous baggage. That Monday feeling and mindset still torment us. It is what we classify to be the beginning of the new week. Goals are set, started, and abandoned on Monday. Monday, we start our new diet, exercise routine or whatever healthy habit we are striving for. Monday is the day we quit drinking or quit hitting the snooze button. Then, something happens that triggers a relapse so we give up, abandon all hope, and tell ourselves we will do it next Monday. It is a cycle of delusion and denial that we all fall victim to.

Starting today, let’s end the hell loop and switch from Monday Bloopers to Monday Troopers. When your boss or coworker gets under your skin, do not turn to donuts for consolation. When your internet crashes, do not walk over to the fridge while you reset your modem. When people irritate you, do not use it as an excuse to give up. All the more reason to push harder. When we were kids our moms use to tell us that "Someday we will thank them" while they beat us or took something away. Stick to it and someday you will thank yourself. You can achieve your goal or you can make excuses, but you can't do both. Stick to it and you will reap the reward. While you’re doing it, put a smile on your face. You are alive.

Tom Wilson said, "A smile is happiness right under your nose." There is always a reason to smile, and if you cannot think of a reason, fake it 'til you make it and smile anyway. All work and no smile is just working to exist. Existing is boring and depressing. Don’t just think it or say it, be like Nike, and just do it. Push yourself to level up and no matter what, do not give up. You’ll never know just how much you can do until you start. A baby step is better than no step at all. In order to walk from point A to point B, you have to take the first step, even if you are taking that first step alone. Your courage will be rewarded.

Cheers to being a Monday Trooper and to having a goal crushing week. If you’re reading this and it’s not Monday or the morning, stick to it anyway. Today is the day!

I’ll sign off with a joke. What is the ideal marriage? A marriage between a deaf man and a blind woman. And if you’re gay like me, don’t analyze, just substitute. Don’t get all bent out of shape and start protesting. Life is beautiful.
