Learn Cybersecurity Without Going Broke

Not long ago, I was staring down a pile of bills, wondering how I'd ever get out of this mess. No college degree. No spare cash. Just a deep desire to make things better and a whole lot of Googling.

That's how I found cybersecurity.

I’m not a tech genius. I'm a homeschooling mom trying to change my future from the dining room table; one lesson, one resource, and one long night at a time. This wasn't an overnight pivot.

Starting out, I pieced together free and low-cost cybersecurity resources, stayed up late watching lessons while folding laundry, and kept going, even when I had no idea if it would pay off.

Here's what actually helped me start learning without drowning in debt

Merit America (Google Cybersecurity Certificate)

Merit America is a nonprofit career training program that helps adults get into tech careers without going broke. I enrolled in their Google Cybersecurity Certificate track, and it's been a game-changer. The coursework is online and flexible, and they offer real human support and coaching.

If you're eligible, you can start with no money down. You only repay if you get a job above a certain salary threshold. (Yes, really.)

Cost: Free tier available | Premium ~$10/month

TryHackMe makes learning cybersecurity feel like playing a game. They have beginner-friendly "rooms" that walk you through concepts like network scanning, digital forensics, and ethical hacking. This is all hands-on and at your own pace.

I started on the free tier, which offers plenty of valuable content. When I could afford it, I upgraded to premium and felt it was well worth the investment.

If you've never touched a terminal or written a script in your life, don't worry. TryHackMe assumes nothing and teaches everything step-by-step.

YouTube Channels That Don’t Waste Your Time

NetworkChuck: Entertaining, beginner-friendly, and explains concepts clearly

David Bombal: More technical but still very accessible

John Hammond: Great for hacking, CTFs, and malware analysis

The Cyber Mentor: Practical and honest advice for breaking into the cybersecurity field

- Open University has several free beginner-friendly courses

Don't get overwhelmed. Just pick one. You don't have to complete every free course on the internet. The goal is to build enough understanding to keep going.

LinkedIn Learning: Some libraries offer free access with your library card

Your resume doesn't have to be perfect right away. Focus on showing you're actively learning and building real skills.
