Here's to Being Happy
As an opportunity slips through your fingers, it is often easy to forget the many others sitting just beside you, waiting to be taken. 2020 had these opportunities passed through many hands, and as the new year calls an end to its first month, I am finally grasping hold and taking strides for the future.

Bravely Writing All I Couldn't Say Before. Top Story - February 2021.
Hey You, When I was a teenager, I wasn’t crazy about myself. If you’ve ever been a teenager, you can probably relate. Why did you hate yourself? For me, I detested how shy I was. I loathed how I found it so difficult to speak my mind. I was so jealous of all the people who, I believed, had such an easy time being confidently themselves while the words I wanted to speak were hopelessly trapped in my chest, squished down behind an awkward giggle and over-eager smile.

Letting go of 2020 and facing ourselves courageously
2020, I’ll never forget you. You brought me to my knees. You enlightened my life through the seclusion of my soul. Being closed off from society with the least human contact brought me closer to who I truly am; it aligned me closer to my soul.

Then it hit me..
A few years back, I was part of a spring trip to Mumbai, India. It was one of the most life changing events I have been able to participate in so far. The time spent with the friends I was with, and our host family, was so valuable. The story I am about to share is brief, but it taught me so much about how part of privilege, in essence, is being able to ignore something because you don't have to deal with it.

Being Present
I remember seeing Watchmen in theatres back in 2009, and connecting with the character who was meant to be the least relatable. Dr. Manhattan was a near omnipotent figure who saw time differently than everyone around him. He could simultaneously see the past, present and future.

200 Reads per Day: Quantifying My February Goals
I decided to set a goal today: 200 reads on my Vocal articles every day throughout the month of February. If it goes well, I may shoot for 300 next month, 400 the following, and so on and so forth until I’m rolling in more reads than I know to do with. (I mean, I know what I’d do with those reads. I get money per read. I’m gonna pay off my student debt, then donate to some charities, and hopefully finally flee to Europe when I’ve got a vaccine in my body and money in the bank. But that’s neither here nor there. My point is, I have a goal. I presently hold about $18.3k in student debt, and that’s not pleasant, but my present goal is to have it all paid off, and I’m chipping away at it, as are millions of Americans everywhere. Heck, I’ve been making payments since my sophomore year. If I had a spare ten bucks, I’d toss it to my debt and watch it not make a dent. “Better ten dollars now,” said 20-year-old me, “than twenty-five dollars in a few years.” Even if those ten dollars were, at that point, 0.05% of my total loan balance, that was still a 0.05% I would not have to pay back. (Percentages are fun, by the way! If you can break your goal down into percentages, do that. It's great.) But, again, I digress.

Why you need a guilty pleasure
The definition of a guilty pleasure is something that one enjoys despite the feeling that it is not generally held in high regard. But it can really mean anything to anyone. What one person thinks is the smartest show to watch can seem ridiculous to someone else. Though, isn't that what is great about the world. Everyone has the right to like or make whatever they want and whatever brings you joy. Whatever it is that you enjoy there is a community out there in the world for that, or mostly anything, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone.

Hellcat's Guide to Nirvana
A deeply satisfied person changing people's lives, that is what I always aspired to be. A reckless, venomous, destructive and self-sabotaging victim, is what my belief system unveiled to me at every turn, and around every corner. It was reflected back to me in every mirror, this was my reality.

I Learned But I Did Not Grow
2020 was a year unlike any other. Everyone in the world shared in each other's pain as we faced a global pandemic while each was struggling with their own troubles. I, of course, am no exception to this. Covid-19 hit during my senior year, causing me to miss out on some incredible milestones such as graduation, prom, and my freshman year of college. The isolation took a toll on my mental health, as it did many others. On top of these struggles, I faced the unimaginable as my mother was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and devastatingly passed away in August. Indeed, 2020 was a year unlike any other.

How to Be More Organized and the Challenges of Chaos Theory
When I was younger, I found myself often engaging in a classic exchange between parent and child. My mother would knock, come into my room, and perform a brief thirty-second inspection; at which time she would label my domicile as a garbage heap or a toxic waste site. My mother would then place the demand upon me that I needed to clean my room. And honestly, I really couldn’t argue with her about this particular observation about my room. After looking at the toys on the floor, magazines and books on my desk, and piles of laundry for months on end that I told myself that some type of cleaning plan needed to be implemented.

The Pursuit of Laziness
For 2021, I decided to be lazy and selfish. As a mental health therapist and small business owner, “lazy” and “selfish” are the antithesis of how I’d normally measure success, but as 2020 drew to a close, they were exactly the anti-virtues that I needed to survive.
