If Jesus Had a Comment Section

A completely fictional account of what might have happened if the Son of God had discovered social media before the Sermon on the Mount

By THE HONED CRONEPublished 23 days ago 3 min read

Imagine Jesus, freshly back from the wilderness, sitting on a rock, staring at the horizon while God downloads the day’s instructions.

“Son, I need you to tell them the truth.”

Jesus sighs.

“But Dad, they’re gonna make fun of me.”

“I know.”

“They’re going to call me dramatic.”

“I know.”

“Somebody is absolutely going to make a meme.”

“I know.”

“And Peter is going to misquote me.”

“I know.”

Jesus opens Notes.

“Okay, what if we soften ‘love your enemies’ to ‘try not to actively despise them’?”

“No.”

“What about ‘blessed are the meek’?”

“Keep it.”

“‘Turn the other cheek’?”

“Keep it.”

“‘Forgive seventy times seven’?”

“Keep it.”

“Dad, that is going to sound completely fucking unhinged on the internet.”

God is silent.

Jesus looks down.

“Fine. I’ll post it to Close Friends.”

And there goes Christianity.

The Sermon on the Mount becomes a vague inspirational carousel with beige backgrounds and a cursive font. “Love your enemies” gets edited to “protect your peace.” “Blessed are the persecuted” becomes “you’re doing amazing, sweetie.” The money changers get a strongly worded email.

And Jesus never flips a table because he’s worried someone will screenshot it out of context.

Imagine him seeing the first hostile comment.

JESUS IS TOXIC.

He types: “I’m sorry you feel that way.”

Deletes it.

Types: “I hear your perspective.”

Deletes it.

Types: “Actually, I have some thoughts.”

Deletes it.

Three hours later, he has 4,700 words in drafts and hasn’t eaten lunch.

Eventually Mary walks by.

“You okay?”

“I’m just trying to make sure nobody misunderstands me.”

Mary looks at the phone.

“Son, they misunderstood you when you were standing right in front of them.”

Exactly.

This is where the joke stops being entirely a joke.

Because some of us have been trained to confuse silence with safety.

Maybe you escaped a violent situation. Maybe you are waking up from years of gaslighting. Maybe something inside you has finally become impossible to unsee. Maybe you were taught that having an opinion makes you difficult, dramatic, disloyal, crazy, or dangerous.

Then you open social media and watch the vultures descend on somebody else’s comment.

And suddenly your nervous system whispers:

Absolutely fucking not.

But courage does not require posting every thought the instant it arrives.

Jesus did not answer every accusation. He paused. He withdrew. He asked questions. He used stories. He knew when to speak and when not to cast pearls before people committed to throwing them back.

So pause.

Edit.

Ask a trusted person.

Use a tool.

Walk away for twenty minutes.

Read it tomorrow.

Then ask: Is this true? Is it mine to say? Am I responding, or reacting? Am I trying to communicate, or trying to make someone finally understand me?

And then, if the answer is yes, fucking say it.

Do not spend nine hours amputating your own sentence because somebody imaginary might dislike it.

A pause is a tool. Silence can be wisdom. Editing can be craft.

But self-erasure is not peace.

If every bird in the forest waited until it knew nobody would criticize its song, the forest would be fucking silent.

Your voice does not need unanimous approval.

It needs alignment.

Truth without cruelty. Boundaries without vengeance. Courage without self-abandonment.

And no, you do not have to become Jesus.

Thank fucking God.

You only have to become more honest about the voice you were given.

Because maybe the point was never that one person should do all the speaking.

Maybe the point was that the Christ in us keeps rising whenever someone chooses truth over terror.

We are here.

It is here.

This is it.

The world is a festering dumpster fire, social media is the world’s largest fucking town square, and everybody is already staring at it.

So make the page.

Make the video.

Write the sentence.

Listen.

Learn.

Speak.

Then put the phone down and go live your life.

“But God, they’re going to make fun of me.”
“Yes. They fucking will. Speak anyway.”

“I will speak of thy testimonies also before kings, and will not be ashamed.” — Psalm 119:46 (KJV)
