Identifying Your Needs: Do You Know Your Priority?

What do you truly value in your life?

By Elaine Sihera Published 3 months ago • 3 min read

Too many of us coast along in life, often without aim or purpose. Yet having clear lifestyle priorities is the difference between living by intended design, coupled with deep self-awareness and living by a random kind of default. Without priorities, your time, energy, and emotional assets are easily hijacked by whatever happens to be loudest, or most demanding, at that moment.

Yet, identifying what truly matters is rarely about discovering brand-new desires. More often, it is simply about peeling back external expectations, superficial busyness, and the demands of others to reveal what was already there.

When you define what truly matters to you, the consequences of that clarity are immediately obvious across every area of your life, but there are four specific advantages to identifying your priorities.

1. You eliminate the need to make constant decisions about every new situation.

If you don't know what comes first, every single choice requires a fresh debate with yourself: “Should I work late? Should I go to the gym? Should I say ‘yes’ to this social invite?"

Clear priorities act as pre-made filters. They minimise the friction of constant renegotiation with yourself, allowing you to make choices quickly and move forward without second-guessing. or unnecessary anxiety

For example, consider someone who has explicitly decided that their health, and family dinner, are non-negotiable essential priorities. When a last-minute, work request comes in at 5:30 pm, there is no agonising conflict or guilt. The priority has already made the choice for that person. They politely decline or reschedule, protecting their evening without the mental toll of hesitation.

2. You stop letting others dictate your value and time.

Without explicit priorities, you are likely to allow other people's agendas to fill the vacuum. You tend to become reactive, instead of proactive: pleasing colleagues, accommodating demands, and playing a supporting role in everyone else's life while neglecting your own.

Establishing your priorities sets the tone for how others treat you. It cements clear boundaries and signals that your time is valuable, preventing you from being treated as dispensable, or relegated to a second-best option in your own relationships and career.

3. You achieve real progress instead of fragmented results

Energy is finite. When it is spread thinly across twenty different directions, for example, you move an inch in a dozen different ways, and end up frustrated by the lack of meaningful progress.

Prioritisation allows you to concentrate your effort where it yields the highest return. By channelling your energy into two or three important focus areas, you gradually build momentum and achieve depth rather than superficial accomplishment.

4. You Protect Yourself from Constant Low-Grade Anxiety

Unclear priorities keep you trapped in a state of perpetual inadequacy. Because you haven't decided what actually matters, you tend to feel like you should be doing everything, all at once, which feels overwhelming; eventually leading to constant guilt, and the persistent feeling that you are falling behind.

Clear priorities grant you permission to let secondary things drop without guilt or regret. They provide the peace of mind that comes from knowing that while you can't do everything, you are doing the right things.

Speaking personally, a long time ago I decided that I love to encourage and motivate others, especially in writing, and hardly anything comes before those two priorities. Everything I do has them at the core of it, as I thoroughly enjoy doing them, and especially seeing the results for people who seek my help. It's been very inspiring and heartwarming.

From the three choices given above,

  1. What matters to you most?

  2. Which one would help you to feel more satisfied and on purpose?

  3. Or perhaps you have your own options?

  4. What obstacles keep you from achieving your priorities?
