December 2020 — my first brush with the “I AM…” journaling.

I expected that a notebook assuring me “positive affirmations” would gradually turn me into a super-sonic-positive-attitude person.

December 18, 2020 — My first entry in this journal book.

I AM…..

I AM…..

I AM…..

I AM…..

I AM…..

As a sincere pupil, I went on five times only to realize that another five “I AM…” were waiting after a “leaf” break in the middle of the page.

I was supposed to answer ten “I AM….”

How am I supposed to come up with ten different ideas every day?

Suddenly, the task became daunting. Still, I went through the ordeal and expressed myself. I felt lighter.

The next day, I started emptying my feelings, and my mind obliged. They were typical opening entries. “I am feeling…”; “I am going to be…” and so ōn.

I expected the same or similar emotions to come out the next day. But, to my surprise, my mind and hands were planning something different. In just a couple of days, the entries started showing different colors.

Every morning from there on, I tested myself. With a simple repetitive prompt and 10-minutes every day, my mind started offering me something new. From my feelings to my mood, about the weather, family, office, running experiences — there was so much to express.

“I AM” indeed was not only turning me into a “positive supergiant,” but it was also giving me newer experiences.

Every morning, one morning at a time, things started becoming clear. First, I started feeling new, innovative, and fresh. Then, I started looking forward to my mind’s “stories” in response to the prompt.

A pattern

I expected a pattern to emerge, but I do not see any pattern after ~6-months of continuous writing and expressing the “I AM….” prompt. Instead, I see a few profound thoughts and statements that seem to be not written by me.

  • How can I write these sentences?
  • I had never felt like that before?
  • I expected myself to write simple and easy words, so how come these strange languages appeared on the paper?

That’s what “I AM….” is doing to me. It’s letting me discover the unchartered territories of my mind.

“I AM…” journaling is turning into an experience.

To learn about myself, to improvise, and become what “I AM…” is guiding me to be.

Here are 25 statements that appeared randomly. In hindsight, each one of them is beyond positive affirmation. It told me about myself and helped me develop a relationship with my mind.

As I read all the previous six months' entries, I realized “I AM feeling….” is a recurring tone. Yet, in the midst of all the feelings that I shared with my journal, I found these beautiful nuggets that elevated my thoughts and perspective.

The idea of sharing these “flash thoughts” is to let you believe in the power of your mind and the power of journaling. The more you write, the more you explore.

(In the end, I was not able to chop off the 26th one, so it stayed)

Journaling is the most powerful habit that I have come across in recent times. It’s been more than five years; I started experimenting with different journaling genres — Gratitude, Positive affirmation, Morning pages, Dream journaling, self-awareness journaling — I have tried them all.

After every page, I come out clear and strong.

Writing is a power and a force that can only be experienced when the letters appear on paper. But, unlike magic, things unravel themselves. Self-awareness doesn’t seem to be a mystery anymore, rather an essential skill to have.

When you say No to writing, you say No to clarity. When you accept journaling, you accept yourself.
