Selling is regarded as a four-letter word by many people. A "salesman" is a person that is regarded as a "low life" in many circles and generally looked down upon. Most people say "I hate selling". However, the word "sell" could be replaced with words like "persuade", or "communicate", or "negotiate". Forget the words "sell" or "selling".

This article is really about how to get your point across. It is about how to be HEARD. It is about how to create "affinity" with another person. Or "how to communicate", or "how to speak effectively", or "how to get someone to agree with you". You could call it an article about "how to get people to like you".

None of those things are offensive. All those things are the BASIS for "selling". We "sell" our ideas every day. Speaking with your spouse or kids will be BETTER if you are BETTER at communication. If you are better at "selling", you will be better at making friends, excelling in your job, and you will have better more harmonious relationships.

If you actually "sell for a living" such as being a car salesperson, or real estate salesperson, or insurance salesperson, you NEED to read this article.

If you are in business, you are selling every day. You sell your ideas to your employees, colleagues and coworkers. You "sell" when you need to get people to support you.

Every day, in every way, EVERY person is "selling" regardless of what job title you have. If you are an accountant you still "sell" every time you talk with another person.

Here is the "big reveal". There are virtually NO REAL salespeople today. A REAL salesperson is more rare today than ever before. "Sales 101" is absent even with people that are earning a million a year or more from straight commission sales.

If you learn and employ the secret of "Sales 101" to your life, EVERY aspect of your life will get better.

The "Sales 101" axioms are:

-SELL YOURSELF FIRST.

-People don't care how much you know, until they first know how much you care.

-If you want people to like you, show genuine concern in interest in them

-If you want people to be interested in you, be interested in THEM first.

-A person's name is the sweetest sound in the language to each person and commands attention every time it is used. Remember, and USE people's name.

-A person's favorite subject is themselves and they will talk for HOURS about THEMSELVES if you ask them questions about THEM and LISTEN! THEN they will LOVE YOU, and BUY whatever you are "selling", (including your ideas).

-There is a sign on every person's forehead. It reads "Make me feel important".

-You have 2 ears and one mouth, use them proportionately (listen more than you talk).

-There are 6 honest serving men, and you should use them till you die. They are: what, when, where, who, how and why.

The bottom line is this. In ALL interpersonal relationships, including when trying to "make a sale", you must SELL YOURSELF FIRST. This means your goal is to develop AFFINITY with the other person. Ask them questions about themselves. Let them talk about themselves. LISTEN TO THEM.

Asking questions about the PERSON and showing you are genuinely interested in THEM by LISTENING INTENTLY, will get people to have AFFINITY with you. This is how you "sell yourself".

This is SALES 101. I have YET to meet a REAL salesperson who uses this technique. All today's salespeople want to do is TALK AT YOU, and try to pressure you to buy.

I met a salesperson who was trying to sell me a house. We spent HOURS together. They talked about each HOUSE, telling me how great each house was, all the facts about the house and how the house was PERFECT for me.

How did they know it was perfect for me. They did not ask me ONE question the entire day. They knew NOTHING about me, my goals, my dreams, my needs, my family, NOTHING!

This is NOT selling.

People HATE being sold, but they LOVE to buy.

When you build AFFINITY FIRST with the person you are talking with, THEN and only then can you be in a position to get that person to make a positive decision and "buy" whatever you are selling, because the person then will WANT to buy from YOU. But remember they will NEVER want to be SOLD by you.

Think about this.
