“As our body journeys through life, and life journeys on our body….life will leave marks on us too. From the creases of our wrinkles to the birthmarks on our bodies to the tattoos we decide to place.”― lauren klarfeld

It was whilst looking for some help to ease my back pain, that I read about how some very talented Tattoo Artists were transforming the lives of those people living with some unsightly scars and birthmarks.

After Years of Back Surgery and Therapy

I saw an image of a young woman on Facebook this morning, who had managed to disguise her scars after years of back surgery and therapy, it certainly put my concerns into perspective!

Some people get tattoos because they love the aesthetic appeal, but that is not the same for everyone, there are also people who have troubling scars that affect them negatively. They live with these traumatic scars and sometimes, just the sight of them will often force them to relive some painful memories.

Some very talented tattoo artists have been creating some unbelievably beautiful tattoos disguising unwanted scars and unsightly birthmarks to help these people become confident again and create positive body images.

You have the power to change your life and tell the story the way you want to tell it. You can make something really beautiful out of anything that is a part of your dark past.

From Scar To Art

This tattoo is really powerful and magnificent. This woman had breast surgery and decided to get an unbelievably amazing tattoo to compliment it. Even if you don’t like tattoos, this one will surely change your mind.

After medical artistry saved her life, creative artistry gave her back lost confidence.

The psychological effect of breast cancer and the surgery has a profound impact on a person's life. Of all the sympathetic words I've said to my friends, who have gone through this, nothing has had so much impact on them as showing them the above image.

Tattoos can disguise some childhood vaccination scars, making the person feel so much better about their skin imperfections.

…and what about those skateboard scars on your knees, when you were trying to perfect the Kickflick and took a tumble…

Let’s use some imagination

This person’s tattoo shows that disguising a scar means there is room for more art to create a conversation piece.

It also means that no matter how bad things are going, it’s never to late to turn it around.

Even scars from wars and conflicts can be turned into an art form. We cannot see the damage inside, but a young person damaged in this way will probably invoke compassion in others.

This is one super delicate way of covering up marks. So, if you have ugly spots, moles or dark freckles, you know what to do next.

Human beings are creative in nature, and by wearing a tattoo is also a form of art and meaning for many. How can tattoos serve as an enabling, healthy goal? If, by physically owning one’s injury with a consciously chosen tattoo, a person establishes power over that injury rather than the trauma continuing to have power over the person.

Take Back Your Power Through a Tattoo

Trauma has a sinister partner called shame. It’s a deeply critical voice that demeans and dis-empowers its host. It keeps the trauma survivor suffering in silence. But research is showing that when shame is exposed, it fades. Healing can begin with a transformation of the story.

Translating that story into art is magic.

There’s a lot of trust involved in publicly displaying such intimate details about one’s life. It is all part of the healing story.
