How to Get and Stay Organized

+ The ultimate guide to creating a routine.

We all want to be organized, but for some it is harder. If that just so happens to be you, I’ve got the perfect thing for you. All the tips you will need to not only organize your home, but your life. We all need a little help sometimes, especially when we just don’t know where to start.

1. Baskets and folders.

Start going through all your important papers, notices, and mail. As you are going through, separate them into categories. Bills, notices, letters, etc. As you sort through, I suggest looking at the dates they’re due, or notifying you about, making sure they are organized by most important, and/or the order they’re due. We both know you don’t want loose papers scattered everywhere. Buy some cute folders at Walmart, or on Amazon, and label them according to the categories you sorted them into.

2. Declutter regularly.

Whenever I want to declutter my space, I take to Pinterest. Because let’s be honest, it can be extremely hard trying to figure out where to even begin your decluttering process. They seriously have the best tips and tricks.

3. Eliminate the unnecessary.

THE SECRET TO THIS STEP is to detach sentimental value. We all have a few things around the house that we know we should throw away, in fact we’ve came close to multiple times, but we just couldn’t bring ourselves to get rid of them… well guess what, that day has come. GET RID OF IT.

4. Create a routine.

This can be very tricky, but only if you make it so. Let’s break it down, so this is soooo much easier. On one of your free days, I’d like you to sit down with a blank sheet of paper. On the front of the paper, draw a vertical line the length of the paper, maybe a little smaller. On the back of the page is where you need to really focus, and be honest. First, I would like you to write down anything you do EVERY DAY. Then think about the time you usually go to work or school (or both), and write it down. One last thing, write down the general time you wake up, and go to sleep. Now that you’ve done these two steps you have successfully created the outline of your routine! Now let’s make a list of any additional activities you would like to do daily, like starting to eat breakfast every day, or doing a skin care routine (I will be posting my skincare routine some time NEXT week), walking for 30 minutes, painting, yoga, whatever your heart is screaming at you to write down, do it. So, part of having a routine is waking up at the same time every day.

You wrote down the time you wake up and go to bed, is this the ideal time you want to wake up, though? Are you getting enough sleep? Could you be getting too much sleep? Studies show, we should be getting eight hours of sleep every night. Are you getting that much sleep? I usually go to sleep around 12 AM. And wake up at 8:30. Well, let me rephrase, I wake up at eight, and it takes me 30 minutes to fully wake up, and start my day. Now your routine outline has a little more structure to it. On the front of your page, mark your vertical line with your ideal wake up time at the top of the line on the left side of it. Do the same at the bottom for your ideal bed time. Mark the time you set for when you usually work/attend school. Now, in the open space, you can set your morning and night routine. The secret to keeping up with the routine you just made is SELF DISISPLINE, it will only be difficult for three weeks, twenty one days. That’s it. You got this, I promise. Email me if you need an extra hand figuring out how to create your routine, I will leave my personal email (checked every day) below, and you can email me with any and all questions you may have, or on any of my socials posted below!

5. Make lists.

Keep track of everything you need to do, everywhere you need to go, reminders. You can’t just keep all this in your head! That planner you bought or made has a notes section somewhere in it doesn’t it? GET TO WRITING.

6. Set goals and deadlines.

When you achieve goals, no matter how big or small, you will always feel so accomplished and empowered, and you will want to keep getting that feeling! So why not set goals for organization? It is a win-win situation, people!

When you take a shower, the towel goes in the hamper, or on the rack, not on the floor. When you fold laundry it’s to be put away, not left in the basket, or on the dryer. It’s very simple. People overthink it. It’s not nearly as much of a pain to clean the house when there’s no mess to clean up in addition to the actual cleaning of the house (I will be posting a cleaning schedule next week as well, from daily cleaning, weekly, bi weekly, and monthly).

If you don’t take anything away from this article, but creating a routine and developing self-discipline, you will still succeed in organizing. That is all you need, I promise you that. I just want you to remember, it’s not nearly as difficult as it sounds, or has been made out to be. As long as you keep up with it, and stop procrastinating, you’ll realize there is no reason to dread organization.
