✨ Healing Ain’t Always Pretty: What the Hood Taught Me About Softness
It’s Time To Heal Yourself

“You can’t heal in the same place that hurt you — but you can find your softness in the survival.”
Let’s be real — healing ain’t always crystals, candles, and cute journals. Sometimes it’s crying in the car so you don’t cuss nobody out. Sometimes it’s walking away from people you swore you’d ride for forever. Sometimes it’s choosing peace over being understood.
Where I come from, softness was seen as weakness. You had to stay sharp, stay guarded. Vulnerability? That could get you hurt. We learned to be strong, not soft — but strong meant silent. Strong meant numb. Strong meant survive.
But surviving ain’t the same as living. And eventually, I got tired of being tired.
🖤 Soft Ain’t Weak
I used to wear pain like perfume — heavy, but familiar. I smiled through betrayal. I held it all in. I poured into people who never poured back.
But healing taught me real strength looks different:
• It’s walking away without a big announcement.
• It’s saying no and not feeling guilty.
• It’s choosing rest over running on fumes.
Softness, in a world that made you hard, is power. It’s choosing your peace even when folks don’t get it. It’s giving yourself permission to feel again.
🕊️ The Hood Gave Me Wisdom Too
Believe it or not, the hood taught me a lot about healing.
• My mama showed me what it meant to keep going with a heavy heart.
• My homegirls taught me how to turn pain into presence — you can still slay and heal at the same time.
• The OGs taught me that silence can be sacred.
We didn’t call it “inner child work.” We just said, “I’m minding my business and praying Grandma’s prayers.”
🌹 Unlearning Takes Work
I had to unlearn a lot:
• That being loud meant I was being heard.
• That loyalty meant staying where I wasn’t safe.
• That being strong meant staying silent.
Healing showed me that I’m allowed to grow past what broke me. I’m allowed to outgrow people who loved the old, broken version of me. And I’m allowed to protect my peace without apologizing.
💬 If You Feel This…
You ain’t alone.
If you’re learning how to walk in your softness after years of survival mode — I see you. I am you. And you don’t owe anyone the old version of you just because they’re more comfortable with her.
Healing isn’t always pretty. It’s not always packaged up in affirmations and incense. Sometimes it’s ugly tears and quiet exits. But it’s worth it.
Because softness ain’t weakness. It’s wisdom.
🧠 The Key to Self-Healing Is Figuring Out Where It All Started
“You can’t truly heal until you understand what hurt you in the first place.”
Healing didn’t really begin for me when I lit sage or said affirmations. It started when I stopped running from the root.
Because truth is — a lot of us are treating symptoms of pain without ever addressing the source. We chase peace without confronting the people, places, or patterns that planted chaos in us. We pray for love while still living in survival mode. We want growth but never pull the weeds.
The key to self-healing is figuring out where it all started.
🖤 Where Did the Hurt Begin?
Ask yourself:
• Who made you feel like you had to earn love?
• When did you stop feeling safe in your body?
• What moment taught you silence was safer than speaking up?
Sometimes, it was a mother who wasn’t emotionally available.
Sometimes, it was a father who only showed up in pieces.
Sometimes, it was bullying. Rejection. Trauma we buried so deep we forgot it shaped us.
Healing means remembering — not to stay stuck in the past, but to reclaim your power from it.
🧩 We Heal When We Face the Pattern
What I realized is: I kept repeating the same cycle in different clothes.
• Different relationships, same abandonment.
• Different friend groups, same betrayal.
• Different jobs, same burnout.
Because I hadn’t faced the first time I felt unwanted, overlooked, or unworthy.
The root of the wound creates the fruit of the behavior. Until you pull it up, it keeps growing — in love, in friendships, in self-worth. And that’s not your fault. But healing is your responsibility.
🕊️ The Process Hurts… Before It Heals
Nobody talks about how triggering healing can be.
When you go back to the beginning, you relive things you thought you forgot. You feel emotions you pushed down to “stay strong.” It’s uncomfortable. It’s messy. But it’s necessary.
Because once you see the origin, you understand the pattern. And when you understand it — you can interrupt it.
That’s where the power is.
🔑 What Healing Really Means
Healing ain’t just about peace. It’s about permission:
• To question what you were taught.
• To say “this hurt me” without guilt.
• To walk away from cycles that felt like home but weren’t healthy.
Healing is choosing not to pass the pain down. It’s looking in the mirror and saying, “I get to be different. I get to be free.”
💬 If This Spoke to You…
It’s time to go deeper.
Ask yourself:
• Where did your survival mode start?
• Whose voice shaped your self-worth?
• What wound are you still trying to ignore?
When you name it, you can heal it.
When you trace it, you can replace it.
When you see it clearly, you can stop bleeding on people who didn’t cut you.
