Why I'm Learning Cybersecurity While Managing Homeschool and Wiping Out Debt

A year ago, if you'd told me I'd be studying cybersecurity while juggling homeschooling, exhaustion, and a pile of unpaid bills, I probably would've laughed, or cried, depending on the day.

But here I am: a full-time mom, full-time chaos coordinator, part-time hacker-in-training.

Not because it's trendy. Not because I've always been obsessed with tech.

I'm doing it because I'm broke, I'm tired, and I need a way out.

Rock Bottom Wasn't Dramatic... It Was Just Relentless

There wasn't one massive "aha" moment that made me realize I needed to change my life.

It was more like a slow erosion of hope.

We were already scraping by on a single income when our only vehicle went down. My partner missed several days of work depending on a ride that didn't always show up. Our electric bill suddenly jumped $90 for no clear reason. Suddenly, surviving felt like an impossible mountain.

Meanwhile, I'm homeschooling my kid, running the household, supporting everyone emotionally, mentally, and logistically... all while trying to figure out how the heck I can bring in some income without losing my mind or sacrificing our routine.

I didn’t have the luxury of "finding my passion."

I needed a plan.

Why Cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity felt... weirdly right.

I’ve always been curious. I like puzzles. I like learning. I'm good at noticing when something seems off, even in people. Turns out, that's half the job in this field.

It's also in demand, and more importantly: it pays.

After some digging, I found Merit America, a nonprofit offering flexible career training for adults like me trying to make a real change. I enrolled in their Google Cybersecurity Certificate program, and it gave me structure, accountability, and just enough confidence to keep going when the self-doubt crept in.

I supplement with TryHackMe, a hands-on platform where you can actually practice ethical hacking, SOC simulations, and more—even if you’ve never touched code in your life.

Am I fluent in Python? No.

But I can analyze logs, navigate Wireshark, and troubleshoot like nobody's business. And every time I solve a challenge or decode an alert, I feel like maybe, just maybe, I'm building something that will last.

What It’s Like Studying Cybersecurity While Homeschooling

Cybersecurity isn't glamorous from where I’m sitting.

It's studying network layers late at night because the house is finally quiet.

It's watching course videos while prepping dinner.

It's managing homeschooling lessons in one tab and learning about SQL injections in another.

It's reminding myself that slow progress still counts. Even if it's interrupted a dozen times a day.

Some days I crush it.

Some days I just survive.

But every day I get a little closer.

More Than Just a Paycheck

I started this journey because we were drowning...

But I'm continuing it because it's changing how I see myself.

I'm no longer just the support system for everyone else.

I’m building a future where I can contribute financially without burning myself out emotionally.

I’m proving to myself, and hopefully to my kiddo too, that it's never too late to learn something hard, do something different, and fight your way into a better life.

To Anyone Else Starting From Scratch:

You don't need to have it all figured out.

You don't need to know everything to start.

You just need to take one brave, messy, slightly terrifying step.
