Fixed vs. Growth: Why Mindset Matters

The truth about breaking down the dynamics of fear, failure, faith, and finishing.

By Hannan MuzeyenPublished 2 months ago 7 min read

Our mindset has a really huge impact in our life because the way we think is the foundation to our success.

Without having a matured mindset, things would collapse. This is why we see people who win the lottery and win the cash by luck as a result of gambling. They then lose the money easily because they haven’t built the mindset of the wealthy individuals. So every success starts off with your mind. In order to succeed you gotta build your mindset by changing your mentality from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. Once you have that portion down, you’re going to move that growth mindset into actions. The way to move it into actions is to just do it regardless. Nothing has to be perfect for the first time because success comes gradually. The way to do it is by making a decision to do something. Once you make a decision, then the how will come. Just believe that you can do it, trust the process, then everything will fall into place. You got this. Just keep pushing forward.

Types of Mindset

There are two types of mindset. The fixed mindset and the growth mindset. The fixed mindset in short is when you have a limited belief in what you can do. People who have a fixed mindset don't acknowledge how far they can go when it comes to the big things they can do in life or even just being successful in life. Fixed mindset individuals will never be able to visualize what they or somebody can do because their belief in terms of what they ask for is not limitless. Growth mindset is someone who has a limitless belief of what they can do. Anybody who has a vision of what they can do will do whatever it takes to ask for more in life and move that vision into action by making a decision. People who have a growth mindset will not allow anybody to get into the way of chasing their dreams. If there’s something that they’re ambitious about, they’ll go get it. They’ll not wait for anybody else to make a decision for them because they know that the end result of the process is worth it. They’ll not make any excuses to not do what they’re doing.

Having the mindset and especially a growth mindset takes a lot of courage and toughness in your mental attitude to get to where you need to get to. So, if you’re going to strengthen your mindset from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset, then you’re going to have to do things that you don’t feel comfortable doing. The reason why I say that you’re going to have to get uncomfortable is because that’s the start to toughening up your mindset. When you’re not putting yourself in an uncomfortable situation, sometimes that can lead to fear and frustration. And sometimes it even makes you lose faith and lose trust in the process you’re in. So, this is why doing things you have never done or the majority is not doing is part of strengthening your mindset. Another way to strengthen your mental attitude is to take the time in the morning to do 5-10 minutes of meditations, affirmations, and visualizations. Affirmations and visualizations have an impact on your mental attitude because it gets into your subconscious mind. This is why you see people who do the affirmations and visualizations become the person they are because your words and imagination have an impact on your life and what you decide to ask for.

People who have a growth mindset have the inclination to do something. They won’t allow anything to get in their way to get things done because they have the discipline to get it done. And that brings me to another point which is taking action. I covered this earlier on in the paper but, I kind of want to go into depth in terms of what it means to move your thinking into action. So, what does it mean to move your words into action? Moving words into action means making a decision in terms of what you will be doing as I’ve also mentioned earlier on in the paper. Once you decide what you will be doing, you’ll get started on the things you will be doing such as laying out your plans and sticking to what you plan on doing. Keep in mind that people who are firm decision makers know what they want. They don’t doubt the process. They stick to the process without having any hesitation. So, making a decision on what you will be doing takes a lot of dedication and discipline to get to where you need to get to. If you’re the type of person that’s not decisive in terms of what you want in life, then now is probably the best time to figure out what you want. Try to brainstorm in terms of what you love doing. Watch some YouTube videos and/or read some books on how you’ll turn your passion into a stream of income.

Finding what you want in life may take some time but, once you find your passion, stick to it. Don’t just hesitate about it and say, “I don’t know about this” and change your mind. When it comes to making a decision in regard to what you’re passionate about, of course there’s going to be some sort of doubts you’ll have. But everything is about pushing and grinding through. And when you’re going through the process, nothing is going to turn out the way you want it to turn out. The truth of the matter is, there’s going to be challenges that you’ll face in the process. So, when you’re going through the process, don’t pay attention to the results. Just go with the process because if you put so much more emphasis on the end result, it’s not going to lead you to success. The only thing it’ll do is lead you to disappointment. So just keep going! Because the moment you want to give it all up at your hardest time is the moment you gotta keep pushing forward!

Why do people fear failure?

The thought process behind people fearing failure is going through with the process. In other words, they don’t wanna give anything a shot and the reason being is because if they try something that nobody has ever done or that the minority is doing, they’re concerned that if they try, it’ll fail and because of this, they allow that failure to define them instead of learning from their failure on what worked and what didn’t work. People who fear failure don't excel on what they’re doing because they focus on the negativity instead of the positivity. For instance, if there’s something that they should give a try, they’ll be questioning "what if it doesn’t work?" instead of "what if it gets better after multiple tries?" So, if fear comes into play in failing, how will having that fear help us grow in learning?

Going through the trouble of trying what you don’t wanna try is part of growth and the learning experience. In order to become successful in what you’re doing, you gotta learn from your failure. Without going through failure, we wouldn’t learn. So, the best way to learn from our failures is what we can do differently in order to prevent our future failures. There’s a saying that goes: "If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!" So, if one idea or thing doesn’t fly, at least you’ll know what does and doesn’t work. So, then you’ll be inclined to do better.

But, for people who are not willing to try new things, they end up having the biggest regret in the long run. That's because they haven’t taken the risk they should have taken back then.

So, this is why trying something different from the average and ordinary person is crucial. Because once you take that step to give it a shot instead of playing it safe, you never know exactly what you’re capable of bringing to the table. Most importantly, you never know who you’ll inspire once you get to the top after all the failures you went through.

How do we get started and when will it be a good time to start?

There’s not really a best time to get started other than NOW! Now is the best time to get started because if we keep on putting things off for tomorrow, how long are we going to keep on saying: "I’ll do it tomorrow" or "I’ll do this another time" or "I got something else to do so I don’t have time." Because if we keep on putting things off for next time, days will pass us by. On top of that, tomorrow is not promised. So, this is why doing it ASAP is the best time to get started. In terms of the "how" question, this won’t be answered until you make a decision to do something. Once you decide on what you want to do, then the "how" will come. So again, the only way to get started is to just get started! Don’t hesitate! Just do it! Because the more you think about it, the more doubts you’ll have. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s make this happen!
