Everyone in life has a purpose, though finding that purpose can be hard. Even when we know what the purpose is, the road to achieving that purpose can be long, tough and overwhelming. So sometimes we opt for the easy life, getting a job working for someone else, ensure its enough to pay the bills, puts food on the table and maybe an annual family holiday. We don’t want to worry about the poor, human trafficking or person next door. We just want to live. But as humans we are made to be purposeful and if we’re anything less, it just won’t work right. But how do we find our purpose?

During the latter part of 2020 I produced a video series for my business called the Paradox of the Arts, as part of that series I spoke about Rethinking, Retraining, Rebooting. A message that the UK government were promoting at the time because the job losses through the pandemic, you will find the link to this video in the description of the video that accompanies this article.

A part of that I found that research in 2018 revealed the around 84% of Britons wish they could change their lives for the better. That’s a lot of people, then lockdown and pandemic arrived, unemployment rose due to businesses permanently closing and access to financial support from government being make available to slowly. But I wonder how many saw this as an opportunity to try something new, including something they are passionate about, that could potentially be turned into a business, since 61% of that survey in 2018 said they felt that they had a talent they don’t use.

I think during these times where we are still living with many different restrictions is a good opportunity to remove excuses and take time out to really understand what matters to us to find our purpose. So here’s a small guide that may help you find purpose.

Firstly look at what it is that you love doing, what it is you are good at. This can take months, even years to figure out, but you’re never too old to find them and start enjoying it. This may not be your 9 to 5 job, it maybe something creative, it maybe being a climate activist, it could be teaching young people in an extra curriculum activity.

The job which we get paid for may not be that of what we love doing, being good at it doesn’t mean you love it or enjoy it. You see the things we love doing are going to be things that if money wasn’t an issue of the world we would still want to be doing it.

But what we are good at and what we love are not always the same things. When we are at this point, sometimes its because we need to discover who we really are. When we make that discovery, and we become that person, we find out why the universe put our souls on this earth, once we have found that truth, and live it, everything else falls into place. There are many things you can do to achieve that, including but not exclusive too, excessive journaling, travelling and meditation.

Once all this comes together, and you find your purpose it will almost certainly be something that will be of benefit to the world around you, whether that be family or the community you in which you live or beyond. If you can bring these three together, what you love, what you are good at without forcing or thinking too much about them, it will probably be something the world needs, you begin to find your purpose, all you need is for someone to pay you and they will. But money should not be your priority, you must not do your purpose for the money, you must do it because you are good at it and because you love doing it and it is that mindset that will attract money. You will end up with enough money to survive, just work hard on your purpose, work on serving others. At the end of the day we are all intertwined, whatever your purpose is will link to someone else and so on, it’s how the world really functions.
