It’s Saturday, April 9th, 2022, and I, like many, am enjoying my weekend by doing chores, catching up on things around the home, and not having to worry about work. For all intent and purpose, I am on book 50, and it’s chapter 14. There’s a lot of writing still left to do. It is getting harder to stay on point, however. There are so many things going on in the world that it’s hard to focus on just one person.

We’re Writing Our Own Stories

Yes, we are writing our own stories. The books may not always start the same as the next person, but the stories all have similarities. People may find that they disagree about writing their own story. Consider that you are, and it’s not too late to change the outcome. Some facts illustrate that the truth is that we are writing our own stories, every day, as long as we’re willing to admit it to ourselves.

Fact #1. Freedom Of Choice

What you do today is entirely up to you. When considering the things you have to accomplish on a given day, which of those things are you forced into doing? Going to work is something we do to earn money. Doing our job is in trade for the money we want.

It can sometimes feel like we have a gun to our heads, forcing us to take a specific action. Unless someone puts a gun to your head, it’s still a choice you make.

Fact #2. Being Accountable To Ourselves

How our lives turn out is entirely up to each one of us. We’re all born differently. From the time we reach high school to the time we die, our outcome is ours to control. If we make or use excuses to explain our lack of success in life, then we’re likely to fail in those areas. We become self-failing individuals because don’t chase a dream and we use excuses to justify why we aren’t making something of a life for ourselves.

“I remember 20 years ago not eating so my daughter would eat.”

— JK Rowling, Harry Potter Author

Rowling was 32 when she started writing the Harry Potter series which ultimately changed her life.

Excuses like “I can’t do it” or “I’m not good enough” aren’t going to do anything toward fixing your life. Rowling proved that it’s never too late to change one's life. It’s entirely up to us.

Fact #3. Excuses.

Excuses (plural noun)

  • a reason or explanation put forward to defend or justify a fault or offense.
  • a poor or inadequate example.

Excuses make life easier at times we need to face that hard road. We justify our lack of actions with excuses. Once we eliminate excuses from our life and take accountability for our lives we can find out who we are. Eliminating the excuses that hold us back from achieving our dreams is like removing the chains that hold us back.

I took a job in a career field that was close to what I wanted. I considered it was close to what I wanted to do and could use it as a stepping stone. After a couple of failures, I let myself get too comfortable with where I was at and what I achieved. Not recognizing that it was my comfort level at the level in my career I was at that held me back caused my mindset to change, and I utilized excuses to trick myself into thinking it was alright. When I became completely miserable with life due to work, I chose to change careers and haven’t looked back.

Fact #4. Learn

Love learning as you write your story. The more you learn in this life, the more possibilities exist. The more possibilities that exist for each of us, the more potential we can develop within ourselves.

Learning helps to improve our skills and talents. While we work for someone else, helping them to build up their dreams, it’s important to use our free time to work toward our dreams. Part of that should become teaching ourselves new skills, expanding our minds, and learning more about ourselves as we identify what we want from the world.

Learning to write is a journey. I’ve known for years, somewhat, how to communicate using the written form. During the pandemic, I started to learn more about how to write and tell stories. I’m furthering my skill writing on Medium and Vocal and working on a couple of projects, a little at a time. While doing so I’ve learned about different things I never had much time to think about as an officer.

In Conclusion

From the time we reach our teenage years, we start making decisions for ourselves and continue to take the reigns of our lives more and more with each passing year. We’re all not going to enjoy the same level of success. Not everyone can be Oprah Winfrey. Or, can they.

A simple Google search will show that ten billionaires grew up just as poor as anyone else. Ten billionaires, most of us know at least a couple of them by name and face. We still live in a world of possibilities and in a country that is known as a land of opportunity. We just have to be willing to do the work, sacrifice, and commit to our goals.

We can all write a new chapter and a new book of our life. Just remember, there can’t be any excuses involved when you’re authoring your own hero’s tale. Take responsibility for your fate and learn as much about life as you can along the way. Then, with each day, you’ll have the opportunity to be happy with where you are in life.
