What is a Role Model?

Imagine a huge beacon on the hill by the sea, which lights up the utter darkness. Without its light, you couldn’t see anything, but now it seems like the day has come to replace this scary and cold night.

That’s how probably having a role model works for people, who are lost in a world with so many paths to choose. A role model, in other words, is a person, whose example can be followed and whose approach to life can be emulated to some degree in order to achieve success. It is especially relevant for younger people who are struggling to find their own way.

A role model is not necessarily a celebrity or a superstar. Everyone can become a role model for you: from a popular rock singer or a world-known actor to a housewife. It really depends on your goals.

Why Is Having a Good Role Model Important

Let’s discuss the advantages you will get if you choose a great role model:

  • It will help you to understand the world. Role models give us a sense of direction and the area we might encounter as well as a sense of who we could become and what the future would be like.
  • You will boost your motivation. Even if nobody supports you and everything around seems so gloomy and discouraging, having a role model will not let you fall into the depths of despair.
  • You will make fewer mistakes on your way and overcome hindrances more easily. When you study an autobiography of your hero, you become more aware of some pitfalls you may face. Of course, it is not possible to avoid missteps at all, but knowing places you should pay more attention to is still very helpful.
  • You will gain an understanding of success as a notion. Sometimes it is hard to define what “being successful” means. But having someone to look up to will not let you be diverted from your aim.
  • You will become better day by day. Your potential will be revealed to the fullest if you have a living proof of the fact that your wildest dreams can come true.

Tips on Choosing a Role Model

Now that we have highlighted the benefits of having a good role model, you may be asking yourself: “How can I find it?” Don’t worry! We have the answer to this question as well. It is true that role models define a lot who we are picking up a bad one can ruin your life. So here are some pieces of advice on how to choose the best option for you!

  1. Do some self-examination. Thoroughly analyze your personality and think of the skills and qualities you want to acquire. It is better if you have in mind a particular field, like writing or playing football. Then consider some examples among people who possess these features and try to emulate them.
  2. Do not find one role model for everything. Otherwise, you will end up being a replica. And no one is interested in those who lack uniqueness. If you want to be an actor, for example, find one person for each skill. Someone is perfect at moving on the stage, someone is natural at establishing eye contact, for someone working with a camera is a cup of tea. And when you put this all together, you will be a phenomenal individual, not a mere copy.
  3. Do not look at an airbrushed version of your role model. We are all humans. Thus, we have some imperfections. And if you look up to only a thin and idealized image, you will feel discouraged soon.
  4. Find someone who is not focused on outcomes, but lives from a powerful intention. Those who are only obsessed with some tangible results and how they look from the outside will not make a great difference to the world. People who left a really big impact presented some sort of inner wholeness of their thoughts and actions to humanity. Their intentions motivated them every day to achieve their goals. Learn how to keep track of your outcomes, but do not be ruled by them.

People Who Can Become Your Role Models

We have looked through many examples of people worth following and now we want to share the best ones with you! Their thought-provoking quotes may even inspire you to write a role model essay about them.

Abraham Lincoln.

He is an outstanding historical role model, an American president who kept the United States united during the Civil War. Among his most notable deeds are the Emancipation Proclamation and freeing the slaves. He went to war with the South to save the Union. He helped the country get through one of its most difficult times.

But, above all that, Abraham Lincoln showed great leadership.

“When I do good, I feel good. When I do bad, I feel bad. That's my religion.”

Michael Jordan

This one is for those who are into sports! The man who is considered to be the best basketball player of all time was rejected when he tried out for the basketball team as a sophomore in high school. However, he didn't give up. The next summer he began practicing non-stop and was selected in a team as a senior. Thanks to his hard work he made it to the NBA in 1984.

“I can accept failure. Everyone fails with something. But I can't accept not trying”.

Walt Disney

There is no person in the whole world who wouldn’t watch cartoons about Mickey Mouse or Snow White. They are the masterpiece of animations, created by Walt Disney, who got fired from his job in a newspaper because he “lacked imagination and had no good ideas”. But he didn’t give up. He decided to pursue his career in art and headed to Hollywood with 20 dollars in his pocket to make his dreams come true.

Today, the Disney Company still produces new series and movies. Besides, there are 11 different amusement parks around the world that carry his name.

“If you can dream it, you can do it”.

J. K. Rowling

Rowling lived as a single mother to her daughter and struggled financially, but never stopped writing. She wrote her “Harry Potter” ideas on the napkin in 1995, on a delayed train. But when the first book was finished, 12 publishing houses rejected it. A year later, she finally managed to get approval, and the series about The Boy Who Lived took over the top-3 slots of the New York Times bestseller list, captivating the heart and imagination of millions of readers around the world.

“It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities”.

To sum it all up, having a good role model has its benefits, but only if you do not emulate blindly and develop your own unique personality.
