Ayali, a Tamil-language web series directed by Muthu, is a poignant portrayal of the struggles of women in a patriarchal society. Set in a small village in Tamil Nadu during the 1990s, the show delves into the lives of several characters who are linked by a common thread of societal oppression. Despite its flaws, the series packs a powerful emotional punch and delivers an important message about gender equality and social justice.

At the heart of Ayali is a touching story about the bond between a mother and daughter, which forms the emotional core of the show. Through the many tear-jerking moments, the series presents a glimpse into the lives of people whose dreams and aspirations are often curtailed by societal norms and expectations. From the simple joy of a bus ride to the realization of true love, the show's many emotional beats will keep viewers engrossed.

Director Muthu weaves together several subplots and characters to accentuate the central theme of the show. The warm colour tones of the visuals serve to establish the period of the story and complement the scorching emotional tone of the narrative. Despite some poorly executed comedy tracks, the series is successful in keeping viewers invested in the story.

However, the show does suffer from a few shortcomings. The screenplay could have been more novel, and some characters are underdeveloped, despite showing potential early on. The ending, which should have been impactful, falls short of expectations. Nonetheless, Muthu takes a strong stand against patriarchal ideas and practices that are still prevalent in society today. He questions why the dignity of caste and creed is hidden behind the bodies of women, and why customs apply only to women and not men.

The music by Revaa plays a strong supporting role, and the performances by the cast are praiseworthy. Abi Nakshatra and Anumol, in particular, deliver standout performances. Every time Thamizh or any other woman in the series raises her voice against the idiocy of the men, one can imagine a crowded audience whistling in support.

It is not clear who the target audience of Ayali is. Is it a story for those with access to streaming platforms, or is it a story for rural and urban men with regressive ideas and the women who are oppressed by them? The latter certainly deserves to hear the message that Ayali delivers, but the series is a necessary and timely story that needs to be told louder every now and then.

Nevertheless, Ayali is a challenging story to tell, and Muthu takes a strong stance against patriarchal ideas that are still prevalent in society. He questions why caste and creed are hidden between the legs of women, why women are defined only by their bodies and their role in child-bearing, and why customs apply only to women. He also does not offend the genuine faith that people have in their deities, as maintaining a balance in this area is a delicate matter. The music by Revaa is excellent, and performances, especially by Abi Nakshatra and Anumol, are commendable.

Ayali is a story that needs to be heard, and Muthu makes sure to deliver it with a strong message. Every time a female character questions the ridiculousness of the male characters, you can feel the audience cheering them on. The series is intended for those who care enough to check out a title with unknown actors, but it is also a story for rural and urban men with regressive ideas and the women oppressed by them. Ayali is a necessary and timely story that needs to be told louder.

In conclusion, Ayali is a compelling and emotional portrayal of the struggles of women in a patriarchal society. Despite its flaws, the show delivers an important message about gender equality and social justice. Director Muthu's strong stance against patriarchal ideas, coupled with the standout performances by the cast, make this series a must-watchh.
