AGATHA CHRISTIE (1890 - 1976)

A Brief Biography

By Marciano GuerreroPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Agatha Christie, whose real name was Mary Clarissa Miller, was born in 1890. She was the third child of a rich, lazy American father and a sensitive, smart mother. Her unusual upbringing was only that her mother and a series of governesses home schooled her at home.

Agatha's dad was a gentleman of leisure. Mr. Miller spent almost all his time at his club and didn't do much to help his family make more money. Agatha didn't think anything was strange about this. She once said that her parents' marriage was almost perfect. Fred Miller died when Agatha was only 11, leaving his family with nothing.

How the family paid servants and family retainers is a mystery, since Mr. Miller never got his hands dirty or did a day's work. It was a story like one of Jane Austen's books, in which three sisters and their mother become homeless overnight.

Agatha's mother Clara took over as the head of the household, just like the resourceful Mrs. Dashwood did in Sense and Sensibility. So, she had a great deal of influence over Agatha.

Agatha married the handsome Archie Christie when she was 24 years old. She adored Archie, who joined the Royal Flying Corps as one of the first pilots when World War I started.

But even though Agatha loved her husband, the marriage ended badly, which caused Agatha a lot of mental pain. Poor Agatha had a hard time because villainous Archie told everyone he was going to marry his mistress of several years right away.

Agatha showed signs she was about to have a nervous breakdown. There's no need to talk about rumors and how strange she was after they broke up.

At the time of their split and subsequent divorce, she had already written some of her best mysteries, becoming the indisputable "queen of mysteries."

The Strange Event at Styles (1920)

The Assassination on the Links (1923)

Who killed Roger Ackroyd? (1926)

The Four Big Ones (1927)

What's up with the Blue Train? (1928)

Agatha didn't start life to become a writer; she only wanted to try writing a detective story when she was 19 years old. Her older sister Margaret, who was already a published writer, told her she wasn't smart enough to be a writer, let alone a mystery writer. She was hurt to the quick! To outshine her sister, she created characters like Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple that will live on forever.

After her divorce, she found it very hard to live in England, so she left to see the world.

In 1930, she married Max Mallowan, an archaeologist who had gone to Oxford. They were married until she died in 1976. Agatha was a sort of cougar because the archeologist was only 26 and she was 40. They got married in Edinburgh, Scotland, at St. Columba's Church. Mr. Mallowan planned their honeymoon, which took them to Italy, then to cities in what is now Croatia that used to be part of Yugoslavia, and finally to Greece.

She lived a full, exciting life and made it through both World Wars. She was a trained pharmacist, a best-selling author, a playwright, an amateur archeologist, a musician who liked Sibelius and Wagner, a world traveler, and a surfer!

Not too shabby for a woman who was home schooled.

Was the huge number of novels she wrote (80) enough? Actually, no. She also put out many short story collections. Estimates of how many books she sold show that she sold about 300 million during her lifetime. Even now, her books are still being sold in over 100 languages.

Agatha Christie, who was a Dame of the British Empire, died of natural causes on January 12, 1976.
