Did you often feel unproductive or have so many things on your to-do list but the list gets bigger and bigger instead of smaller?

Then you should properly think about structuring your day ahead. One of the smallest things that I implemented in my routine is setting myself three goals for the next day. That’s it — just write down three goals & you’ll feel more productive and get more done. Sounds too easy, right?

Daily goals bring a level of control and prioritization to your day

While others jump into the day and wait to see what the day brings — You will have a plan of what needs to be done and that’s the most important of them.

I recently finished the book ‘The One Thing’ by Gary Keller which talks about as the title explains “The one thing”. From his point of view, you should reduce your to-dos to just one thing that needs to be accomplished that day. Ask yourself: “What is ONE thing I need to accomplish today?

I like this idea because often we find ourselves wasting our time — scrolling through social media to find a little bit of inspiration or motivation.

However, setting yourself one goal brings ambition to achieve it. It’s a small goal for your day and that’s great. I think crossing out a task is such a great feeling. Thus, we want to try to get this feeling every single day.

Why 3 goals and not just one?

It’s a good question why three goals and not just one. A few months ago I started using Notion and tried to organize everything there. From structuring my day, week to just creating a small cookbook with standard recipes. It’s an awesome way of digital journaling.

In doing so I realized that one thing often isn’t enough. Often this goal was business-related and not personal. I felt motivated to achieve this business goal but the rest of the things were in the back. The thing is, we are not only business robots, we have so much more in our life. We want to go out with our friends, care about our family, do sport and much more — How should this fit in one goal?

My conclusion was I set myself three goals & prioritise them. Focusing on my business, but also on my personal stuff. This leads to a greater balance and helps you do things throughout the day that you love and should do — so that you feel better. Writing done just the task to go to the gym can make such a big impact. Because when the day comes to an end and you know that work maybe was not good that day — you see your 3 tasks for that day and just push through to cross that tasks out. After that, you are more proud of yourself.

Taks = Quest

Just to make this clear, you should not be a productive beast. Moreover, think about this as a quest, like in a video game. Every game you played has quests. A task that needs to be accomplished to go to the next level or just level up. This makes the game more interesting, more existing. You are so ambitious to achieve this goal.

And in our life, do we have quests?

The small answer is, not really, there is no person that says to you: “Go to the gym”, “Write your old school friend” or so on. You are the game creator of your own life — Therefore you need to design your own quests and this day-by-day.

So just start in the evening and write down three things you need to accomplish the next day:

1. First task

2. Second task

3. Third task

That’s it — you will see that this will make a great impact and makes the day more enjoyable. Positive side effect: You get more done — for yourself.
