For the past couple of days I have had countless coincidences regarding my Root Chakra. I've never been one to closely work with my chakras‚sure I know the basic functions of them and some of their correspondences, but that was about it.

For those of you who don't know what the Chakras are—essentially they are energetic centres in the body that are responsible for the proper functioning of our energetic health. There is a whole lot more to this complex system and I encourage you to conduct more research in order to fully grasp and harness the power of this system.

Symptomatic

Since receiving some pretty loud and clear messages from the universe and my body, I have learned that I have an over-active Root Chakra a.k.a Mulahadra or Base Chakra. This explains all of the weird symptoms I've been having, such as insomnia, digestion problems, irritability, annoyance, and materialism (over-spending). One of my more chronic conditions is Psoriasis- which is an inflammatory skin disease that is caused by your skin cells reproducing faster than normal due to food allergies, stress, and other environmental factors. I never knew that these issues were connected to the Root Chakra but since learning this, I have been on a quest to learn more!

What is the Root Chakra?

The Root Chakra is the first of the seven chakras which is found in the reproductive area. Ironically the Root Chakra does not rule the feet. Rather, the Root Chakra draws up energy from the earth through the feet and is transmuted in the reproductive system through the release of hormones. When we are not receiving sufficient grounding, we imbalance our physical body—resulting in health challenges.

Grounding is the main function of the Root Chakra. When it is disconnected from the earth, it can not dispel negative emotions from our bodies, hence why we can experience moodiness and other symptoms like the ones I previously mentioned.

Is my Root Chakra Over-Active or Under-Active?

An Over-Active Root Chakra can manifest as the following traits:

  • Nasty Temper
  • Insomnia
  • Digestion Problems
  • Irritability
  • Over-Spending
  • Very Strong Libido

An Under-Active Root Chakra can manifest as the following traits:

  • Body image issues
  • Feeling out of control in your life
  • Feeling extra sad—depression
  • Laziness
  • Anemia and Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Inability to focus or concentrate
  • Restless
  • Disorganized
  • Low Libido

**As always, it's important to consult your Doctor before assuming this is the only reason for the above mentioned symptoms.

Earthing

Earthing is the best way to re-balance a Root Chakra. However, we run into a problem when the climate we are living in does not allow for Earthing. I live in Ontario Canada which makes earthing in the winter time impossible. I cannot walk barefoot in the grass when it's covered in ice and snow and even going for a walk outdoors is very hard when the conditions are intolerable. So, how do you winterize your Root Chakra?

Winterizing Your Root Chakra Techniques

  1. Buy cat grass to run your feet through
  2. Do some indoor gardening
  3. Eat root vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, and beets!
  4. Root Chakra Meditations—super easy to find on YouTube
  5. Listen to drum music
  6. Work with grounding crystals such as Black Tourmaline, Onyx, Hematite
  7. Physical activity such as dancing and running
  8. Have a foot salt bath

Tips

I wouldn't recommend using all of these techniques at once, as you want to ensure you are not becoming so rooted that you are throwing yourself off balance. Being too grounded has its problems as well such as over-eating, inflexibility, and grumpiness. Try using one of these techniques at a time. Keep a journal to take notes of how you feel afterwards. If you don't notice a difference, try incorporating more than one of these hacks into your life.

Remember, healthy roots means a healthy plant!
