How agile are you? Are you a person who moves around a lot, or are you a person who moves hardly through your days?

How active are we through our days defines both how young we would live and die.

As you can guess, this article intends to reflect on why being active is necessary, and in small ways leading to bigger wins towards our wellness in the longer term.

Why do we need to be active?

There are several benefits to being active through your days, some of them below.

- You burn calories efficiently, reducing chances of accumulating fat in your body

- You reduce probabilities of chronic illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension

- You improve with the activation of your brain cells and their functioning

- You keep yourself in a good mood

What could you do to keep yourself active through your days in small ways?

- Make it a habit to climb a staircase whenever you have an opportunity at home or work. With every staircase walk, you bring your heart and lungs to function efficiently. Your lower body muscles get worked out better, and they become stronger.

- For any domestic needs, such as going to a nearby shop, you could go by walk. I understand this may not be possible in many countries like the US, where residence and market places are far from each other. Despite that fact, we could always be thinking of walking for various activities instead of driving.

- Have you thought about using standing workstations? It's a great way to keep you mobilized. When you sit in a chair for long, we mostly get stuck to it, without even getting up enough for water or bio-breaks. Not just that, our glute, hamstring, and quad muscles become weak and lose strength over time as we keep them unengaged. But when you stand, you have better chances to keep them engaged. Below is a picture of my recent standing workstation :-). These days, you also get customized movable workstations to fit all your family members based on their height.

- If you notice, when we sit for longer, our joints like the knee, the hip does not get enough blood circulation, and when we return to a normal position, we feel the ache in those joints. By repeating to be in the sitting position for years together, our joints become weaker.

- Use a reminder on your mobile or laptop to know when to get up from your seat.

- You could work out as you watch TV at home. Need not be only intense workouts. You can sit in a specific Yoga Asana (which I do often to keep my muscles stretched well).

How long do we stand or mobilized in a day?

Many survey results show that at least every 30 minutes, we could get up and move around a bit to better our blood circulation, muscle, and joint conditions.

For example, when I attend meetings or have conversations, I try to be in a standing position as much as possible.

Wherever you are (in the office or at home), you can always get up every 30 min. Drink some water, take a bio break, stretch your arms, fold your legs, few bends, stretch few muscles, and keep you warmed up.

Summary:

Covid-19 Pandemic has immobilized us more. We have more reasons to be conscious of how mobile we are. We can plant great habits to keep us moving more through the days. Not just until we come out of pandemic, but for many more years to come.
