Essential oils seem to be all the rage these days and for a good reason too! They have multiple benefits for physical and mental health. You might even be someone who puts a few drops of lemon essential oil in their diffuser when practicing yoga or a drop of lavender on your wrists before bed at night to help you relax, but there are many more unique and exciting ways to use essential oils with the entire family.

Bath Bombs, Candles, and Soap

Whether you have young kids or teenagers, making your own bath bombs, candles, or even soaps can be a great bonding activity that encourages creativity. You can easily find kits for these online or at your local crafting store. And the great thing is you get to choose the scent, the color, and any special additions to this creation. This is particularly useful if you have a favorite scent that no one seems to carry. You can even add some to your DIY slime! If you’re not quite sure where to start, Young Living Essential Oils is a great resource for more information.

Edible Essential Oils

Not all essential oils are safe to digest, but some are and they have many great benefits and can even be used in cooking recipes with the kids. Oregano oil can be added to your favorite Italian dish or bergamot to create Earl Grey tea. It might be a fun experiment to brew a cup of tea and allow your child to take a sip before adding this oil. Once added, ask your child to describe the difference in taste. Cinnamon bark, lemon, and black pepper are just a few of the essential oils that can be added to your diet. Not only do they add a spark of flavor, but if you or someone in your family is on a weight loss journey, it can assist with dieting and surpassing one’s appetite

Home Remedies

We hear about all the things essential oils can help with, but one that’s great for the family is the acne treatment properties of specific oils. Tea tree and clove oil help with acne. They also may treat skin tags, warts, and other skin conditions. However, it is always recommended to consult a doctor before trying any new treatment, and remember to dilute the oils when necessary. Clove oil is also a great home remedy for infections. There is a great guide that describes the different healing properties of different oils. Not only are there oils that help with skin or infections, there are also oils that can help stimulate appetite or assist with stomach pain, such as peppermint or ginger.

Relaxation Techniques

Whether you have a youngster running around or perhaps your teenager suffers from anxiety—or maybe as a parent you need to relax—there is a great benefit in anxiety reduction and calming effects by using essential oils. Lavender is the most common of these oils, but there are many others oils that assist in reducing anxiety and grounding. You may try giving your child a rice pack scented with sweet orange and lavender. Ask them to squeeze it and smell the scent and explain how it makes them feel. Older kids may benefit from a drop or two of these oils on their wrists or placed in a diffuser while they go through a guided meditation on YouTube or with an app such as Headspace.

Don’t let your use of essential oils be limited! Grab a DIY slime kit and throw in some fun scents, make your own bath bombs, or even cook your favorite dish with them! Present these different ideas to your family and see which ones they’d be most interested in. And don’t let your essential oil experience stop with these fun and unique ideas—there are many resources and tutorials online with the different and unusual ways in which you and your family can use essential oils in your daily lives.
