Avocados are lovely little things.

Not a day goes without me eating an avocado.

They are so simple and yet so delicious.

I can eat them by simply drizzling olive oil and some Himalayan salt.

They are an absolute delight and essential fat in my diet daily.

I didn’t know that avocados secretly help improve gut health, and studies can’t pinpoint how these green goodies impact the microbes in the gut.

Sure, avocado’s help you feel full and contain a lot of fibre, but they are also powerful enough to influence our gut microbe’s.

Researchers found that eating avocados every day (hopefully a healthy meal) had a greater abundance of gut microbes that break down fibre and produce enzymes that help your gut become healthy.

The fat contained in avocados is beneficial for your heart health.

Different kinds of fat seem to affect the microbiome in our guts.

Soluble fibre is essential for our overall health & impacts our gut bacteria.

One avocado contains about 12 grams of fibre. This can add up to our recommended daily intake of 28–34 g of fibre per day.

If you consume enough fibre-rich vegetables, this total should become relatively easy to achieve.

Unfortunately, less than 5% of Americans eat enough fibre.

The normal levels are between 12–16 grams, which isn’t enough. But, when you start adding avocados in, you can quickly meet or excel at your levels.

Fibre is essential for our guts.

We can’t break down dietary fibre ourselves, and we need the help of those little fellas in the gut to do it for us.

So, our gut loves fibre and feeds upon it, then we become healthy and, of course, find weight loss a whole lot easier!

We’ve been focusing on heart-healthy meals to lose weight and feel great for years.

But what about picking specific foods that enhance our gut health too?

The key to getting leaner, having supreme mental clarity and feeling good about ourselves starts in the gut.

Fibre also helps us lose weight and provides the much-needed feeling of fullness. If we are constantly on the prowl for more foods, we have greater chances of ruining our weight loss efforts.

So, next time you are running around getting all your shopping complete, think about adding avocados to your list.

You can eat avocado with pretty much anything, and well worth the expense.

Some storing and recipe tips for your avocados

  • Buy them unripe so you can store them for a few days.
  • Once they begin to soften, place them in the fridge and try to eat them as soon as they become too soft.
  • Fast track the ripening of avocados by putting bananas near them.
  • To make a fat bomb mousse, you can blend softened avocado with cacao and honey. It's an excellent way to value the over-ripened avocado instead of throwing it away.
  • Four a savoury dressing, blend avocado with half a lemon or lime juice, a drizzle of olive oil, and some salt to taste. This becomes a creamy dressing that you can add to your baked veggies, potatoes or as a dressing on your salad. Spread it on a hot toasted piece of sourdough and add scrambled eggs on top - utterly divine
  • Cut up in cubes and place with pumpkin and pepita seeds in your salad.
  • Scoop straight after you cut an avocado. Olive oil, salt and lemon juice are optional for this one.
