How to lose weight and keep it off for good is no simple feat. If you really want to know how to lose weight, you need to first consider the reasons why you’re trying to do so in the first place, what your long-term goals are, and most importantly – whether you’re actually trying to improve your health or simply change your appearance. While those reasons might be related, they aren’t always on the same page, and if that’s the case with you then maybe a more wholesome approach to weight loss may be best for your long-term success.

Start by assessing your current weight

If you are overweight and healthy, your weight is probably affecting your life in one or more negative ways. Once you determine which of these effects you’re experiencing, do a little research into ways to solve them. Determine what would work best for your lifestyle, and begin implementing it slowly. Remember that all weight loss doesn’t have to happen at once—and if it does, you may suffer other negative side effects such as fatigue or heart palpitations.

Consider your goal weight

It’s important to consider your goal weight when determining a healthy rate of weight loss. If you want to maintain your current weight and activity level, losing 1 or 2 pounds per week is a healthy target. However, if you want to go on a weight-loss diet, aiming for somewhere between .5 and 2 pounds per week is reasonable. Any faster than that and you risk losing muscle mass or dropping your caloric intake too low.

Follow a diet plan

A good diet plan doesn’t mean giving up all your favorite foods. It just means swapping in healthier options that are still delicious, filling, and satiating. This doesn’t mean you can never have ice cream again, but it does mean that for a week or two (or three or four), you might have some almond milk ice cream instead of full-fat vanilla. It also means that rather than reaching for a cookie when you get home from work, you grab an apple instead.

Avoid Fast Weight Loss Plans

Fast, aggressive weight loss is never a good idea. It’s dangerous and it can have lasting consequences for your body. This is especially true if you plan on losing more than 10 pounds within a month or two.

Exercise at least an hour every day

You’ve probably heard it a million times—exercise is good for you. Well, no shit. But here’s why you’re now hearing it again: One of your biggest goals as a human being should be living a long, healthy life—and exercise helps get you there. Study after study has found that regular exercise can help decrease insulin resistance and the risk of chronic diseases, like heart disease and diabetes.

Use apps to make exercise easier

Technology can be your best friend when it comes to losing weight. The most popular fitness app is called Fitbit, and if you don’t have a smartphone, there are more affordable options such as pedometers that keep track of your steps. But even without technology, you can use a simple measuring tape or calculator to track your progress. You should also weigh yourself regularly, which helps you monitor your fat loss success—and stick with your plan long-term.

Stay Hydrated During Exercise

!!! You can’t see it, but your body loses water every time you sweat. Exercise on an empty stomach, and you’ll also pee more, so make sure you stay hydrated and drink a glass of water after each exercise session. During your workouts, try drinking sports drinks instead of sodas or sugary energy drinks for additional hydration benefits. Drink about 16 ounces of fluid about an hour before a workout to give yourself enough time for your kidneys to start processing any excess fluids.

Have Someone Accountability Partner (but only one!)

As with any major lifestyle change, you’re more likely to succeed if you have support from people around you—your friends, family members, etc. Losing weight and keeping it off is no different. So find a partner (or two) who will hold you accountable for achieving your goals. The more people you have supporting your efforts, the better. If needed, get a group of friends together who can help each other out and stay on track as a group.

Take supplements, but don’t rely on them alone

You can rely on supplements alone, but they don’t provide as many benefits as a healthy diet. If you want to drop pounds quickly and safely, use them in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle. If you have money concerns, it’s best to start off using supplements alone and then add more foods into your diet if that hasn’t worked for you.

Don’t Forget About Surroundings

If you are living in an unhealthy environment, it will be hard for you to stay motivated. To help you out of your unhealthy state, make sure that your home is a place where you can eat healthily and exercise often. If you live with roommates or other family members, then bring them along with you on your journey towards a healthier lifestyle. Tell them what they need to do in order for everyone involved to succeed in their new healthy habits.
