Improved Flexibility

If you were only going to the gym and lifting weights, you may be able to build strength, but it would be at the expense of your flexibility.

Your head can be compared to a bowling ball – it is heavy, round, and big. If it is balanced right over an erect spine, it will take less work for your back and neck muscles to provide the needed support. If it is moved forward several inches, it will strain the muscles. It is clear that after you hold this large bowling ball in a forward position for 12 hours per day that you would be tired.

However, fatigue may not be the only issue you are dealing with. If you have poor posture, it can cause all sorts of pain, including in the neck and back. It may also result in other joint and muscle issues. As you slump over, your body may try to compensate by flattening out the normal inward curve in the lower back and neck. This is going to result in pain and eventually degenerative arthritis in the spine.

Prevent Joint and Cartilage Breakdown

Every time you are engaging in yoga activities, your joints are going to go through the entire range of motion. This will help to prevent cases of degenerative arthritis or even mitigate disabilities. Your joint cartilage is similar to a sponge. It will receive fresh nutrients only if the fluid has been squeezed out and if a new supply is soaked up. If you don’t ensure proper sustenance, then neglected parts of cartilage may wear out and expose the underlying bone. This is going to cause pain and other issues.
