Protect Your Peace
Start writing...used to think “self-care” was all about bubble baths, spa days, and the occasional nap. And while those things are great, they don’t solve the deeper stuff—the stress, the people-pleasing, the anxiety that sneaks up late at night. I learned the hard way that real self-care goes deeper. It’s not just about treating yourself, but about protecting your peace. Let me tell you a little story. --- The Moment Everything Changed A few years ago, I was stuck in a cycle. I said yes to everything—extra shifts at work, helping friends move, family obligations, volunteering for things I wasn’t even passionate about. I thought I was being helpful. I thought I was being kind. But inside, I was drowning. One day, I hit a wall. I remember sitting in my car after work, exhausted and crying quietly into my steering wheel. No one had done anything “wrong,” but I had nothing left to give. I was running on empty. That was the moment I knew something had to change. --- The Power of "No" It started small. The next time a coworker asked me to swap shifts, I said, “I can’t this time, I need to rest.” And you know what? The world didn’t fall apart. I started checking in with myself before saying yes to anything. Do I really want to do this? Do I have the energy? Am I doing this out of guilt or obligation? Learning to say “no” was the first step in protecting my peace. And honestly, it was life-changing. --- What Is Protecting Your Peace? Protecting your peace means setting boundaries. It means making space for your own well-being, even when others might not understand. It means choosing yourself—kindly, but firmly. It doesn’t mean you stop caring about others. It means you stop abandoning yourself in the process. Here are some things I now do to protect my peace: I stop scrolling when I feel overwhelmed by bad news or comparison traps. I walk away from conversations that drain me. I say no without feeling guilty. I rest without needing to “earn” it. I spend time alone to recharge. --- It’s Not Selfish—It’s Necessary A lot of us were raised to believe that putting ourselves first is selfish. But here’s the truth: you can’t pour from an empty cup. When you take care of your mental and emotional health, you show up better—for your family, your friends, your work, your creativity. It’s not selfish to protect your peace. It’s wise. It’s loving. It’s how we stay well in a world that never stops asking for more. --- A Message to the Vocal Community If you’re part of this beautiful Vocal community, you probably know how powerful our voices can be. Whether you’re a writer, a reader, or someone just passing through, I want to remind you: you matter. Your peace matters. Your energy matters. Let’s be the kind of community that uplifts each other, not just with likes and comments (though those help too!), but with honesty and kindness. If you’ve ever felt burnt out or lost, I see you. You’re not alone. Drop a comment below—what’s one thing you do to protect your peace? Let’s share tips, stories, and support. Let’s make this space one that nourishes the soul. --- Final Thoughts You don’t need to wait for a breakdown to start setting boundaries. You don’t need permission to rest. You don’t need a crisis to realize your peace is worth protecting. Start small. Say no when you need to. Say yes to what fills you up. Take a break. Go for a walk. Let that call go to voicemail. Turn the volume down on the outside world so you can hear yourself again. Because when you protect your peace, you protect your power.
