A decent stretch causes your muscles to hurt. This is quite normal and a necessary component of the procedure. Stretching appears to have been with us from the dawn of time, especially among athletes.

Holding the stretch for at least seventeen seconds is an important part of successful stretching. This is a nugget of knowledge I picked up from a ballet teacher a few years ago. Any stretch less than 17 seconds, she claimed, was ineffective.
