It’s that time of year when the pumpkin spice starts to flow and everything turns into beautiful reds and yellows. The pumpkins start to be on every doorstep because it’s fall and it’s halloween. Or Samhain.

If you are a practicing witch or someone that is interested in the craft, you probably know this is a sacred holiday full of magick and connections with the other side. Th veil is very thin around this time and it’s much easier to speak to loved ones and ancestors that might have passed over. You also may want to use the time to connect to your own magick and power, but how do you do that?

The History of Samhain

The history of Samhain has taken on many different looks depending on what culture you look at. For the most part, Samhain is considered a fire holiday that honors the dead. The Celts would have a hug gathering where the village would light their hearths and allow them to burn out in honor of the God and the Dead.

The village would then gather with Druid priests and they would light a bonfire in the middle of the village. They would also commonly sacrifice animals to honor the Gods.

Samhain is also known as the death of the God after the Goddess has given birth to him and he has grown. This is also why the sun is honored in many of these gatherings.

Samhain in Modern Times

In modern times, Samhain has been changed to Halloween and all of the fun things that come with it. The idea of dressing up as a member of the dead was thought of as a way to walk with the dead and the fun tradition is still used to this day, but now it’s to get scare others or get candy.

One of the best thing to do with honoring the holiday is to set up an altar. If you already have one, you can add yellows and reds to it as well as pumpkins and gourds to create a way of honoring the holiday. You may also want to put your altar in a south facing direction so it’s facing the element of fire.

Another thing you can do is to create a ritual. This doesn’t mean you go out and you start a bonfire in he middle of you neighborhood, but you can use your fireplace or a caldron for your rituals. You also don’t have to follow anyone else’s idea of what to do. This ritual is going to depend greatly on what you are trying to do, where the moon cycle is and how many people may be doing it with you.

The Celts were very into celebrating, so if you decide to have a party in honor of the God before your ritual or you want to make it a part of one, then not only will your ancestors feel the intense energy of it, you will too.

Samhain is only one of the holidays celebrated by modern Witches and it’s one of the most widely known, but if you choose to do rituals and spells, you need to know what you want your outcome to be. That way you can think it into being while you are doing your work. Use the power of Samhain to connect with those you love and watch as they help you to become who you were always meant to be.
