Can you remember a time when you weren't given a daily total of how many people had died from a certain disease?

It's strange isn't it? Our governments and media have never told us how many people have died that day from cancer. Or how many have been killed in road accidents, for another example.

So it was once difficult to ascertain if the numbers of Covid-19 deaths were relatively worrying.

The big picture, as we now appreciate, is devastating. As I write this, the total number of deaths from Covid-19 around the world is edging towards 3 million.

"But what about the numbers who have survived?!" Ah yes, the familiar cry. In fairness, we do need to hold on to something positive, we do need to put some things into perspective.

So, also as I write this, the number of people around the world who have recovered from Covid has topped 100 million. And that is truly something to be thankful for. I'll give you a country-by-country breakdown further on...

I hope the obsession with stats will calm down soon, but of course they also give us hope.

I live in the UK and we have had 30 million people (more than half the adult population) vaccinated with at least one shot.

Every time that figure rises, and every time the death rate falls (it is now in double digits daily in the UK), we can see light at the end of the tunnel.

The vaccines, of course, have given us all hope of returning to something like normal, but the death toll still rises. Every single one of those people a life, a personality, a much loved human being no doubt, who otherwise would have stuck around longer on this planet. For some; much, much longer.

We should never, ever forget these casualties of Covid-19, and in their name we must ensure that the world is ready for the next pandemic. Because it WILL arrive. And many scientists expect it to be bigger and more devastating than this one.

The link between pandemics and wildlife

Scientists have warned that modern-day rates of environmental degradation and biodiversity loss will undoubtedly lead to more devastating pandemics like Covid-19.

An astounding fact is that the number of disease outbreaks has more than TRIPLED EACH DECADE since the 1980s.

And more than two-thirds of these diseases originated in animals. Most were transmitted directly from wildlife to people.

The warnings have been sounded for a while now. but are not being heard by many governments - destruction of habitats, such as deforestation and agricultural development, are increasing human contact with disease-carrying wild animals. It's asking for trouble.

The world must work as one

I have always seen the world as one place. I have no time for borders, nations, political and military land grabs.

We are all clinging to the same ball of rock, hurtling through space, and although we may have different interpretations of why we are here and what life is all about, I hope we have learned the lesson that we truly do need to work closer together in future.

We should not be each other's enemies. The unknown is the enemy. The unknown will claim more lives. And we can only battle the unknown as one, science-led army.

To appreciate the scale of this pandemic, it's jaw-dropping to look through the real-time updated figures from around the world of Covid confirmed cases, active cases, deaths and the numbers recovered.

I've laid that out for you, so you can regularly check on progress and hopefully use the stats to keep focusing on that light at the end of the tunnel.

Take care and stay safe. We WILL get through this one.
