Question: "I need help going deeper. What can I do?"

This is a question that comes up from time to time because it is simply assumed we all relax with the same ease. The same can be said for people's belief that everyone has the same skill, ability, and potential for how they concentrate. When I get a question like this I can see that the desire and follow through is there. This question gets at the knowledge, skills, and ability to get a better outcome from what they are experiencing. This can be an opportunity to bring together different methods of trance in order to adjust potential energy in the body and mind to relax even more with hypnosis. "I have been interested in hypnosis for many years and have tried to drift into a deep state of hypnosis. I am only able to achieve a some what relaxed state. Is there something I can be doing to help drop deep and let go?"
Being in the right mindset can help you go deeper. You mention relaxation and most people picture a relaxed puddle of an individual when they talk about going deeper. Relaxation is a skill that improves with practice. If you are having trouble getting deeply relaxed in hypnosis you're likely having difficulty relaxing in general. If you can sit somewhere in a chair and be quiet and comfortable to watch the world go by for an hour or so you are on the right track. If not then you need to practice relaxation as a skill. Some of us have gotten used to what I refer to as up-time trances. These experiences are relaxed energized states where you may do multiple tasks. Some people find it beneficial to burn off that full bodied energy before sitting down for relaxation. Listen to your body and get a sense if walking, running, or doing a repetitive exercise that allows you to use that energy may help. Time of day may be something to consider for your choice of exercise as some people I know love to exercise before winding down before bed and others feel best doing that in the morning.
To begin practicing relaxation in such a state you can simply walk, run, and track your surroundings by doing walking or running meditation. Best of all you do not just have to pick one type of state to practice these skills. You be very active and transition into deep relaxation at the midpoint of the session for example. Depending on your level of stress and energy you might want to expend it by doing a up-time meditation first and allow your body to associate the relaxation that happens after with the deepening state of hypnosis. You also can start very relaxed and begin to build up energy in your body and finish in a more active state. Work with your body and track your improvements. It's the best way to recognize how you are developing. I hope this helps.
