One Way To Blank The Mind and Create Amnesia With Hypnosis

One of the most bittersweet feelings has to be when you realize how much you’re going to miss a moment, while you’re still living it.

How many of you have wished you had a trigger to create a blank state in someone? Perhaps, you have had the urge to show someone they were in a trance or hypnosis by having them forget a number, their name, or a friend's name. While it is possible to hypnotize a person and cause them to forget they were hypnotized, their name, their phone number, and so much more, the memory loss may only be temporary.

Immediately following hypnosis, a subject may experience a temporary form of amnesia - especially if proper post-hypnotic suggestions were given. One of my subjects started out going so deep, so quickly that it took practice to remember she was in trance. Whatever you are doing with a subject, you will always be working to increase their ability and skill as a subject. Everyone will have different strengths and weakness so you will have to explore, test, and practice the phenomena we are interested in. Sometimes the manifestation of hypnotic phenomena does not present itself in a way that we are expecting. Let's get back to blanking someone.

You can also cause memory loss in a person during conversation (and make them forget the time, their name, where they work, etc. ) But again, the effect is only momentary. Hypnotists usually only use conversational, non-trance amnesia techniques like this one to cause confusion and preoccupy the critical mind of the person they are attempting to hypnotize. A form of waking, or uptime hypnosis. For example, here are a few ways that are commonly used to create temporary amnesia:

1. Before And After

Immediately before performing an induction and putting their subject into trance, a hypnotist may choose to engage them with general small talk. For example, the weather. The hypnotist may say the forecast is calling for rain and he thought he heard thunder just a moment ago. Then they immediately begin the hypnosis session. At the conclusion of the session, the hypnotist will emerge the person from trance and immediately continue talking about the rain and thunder he is hearing outside. The unfocused mind will always attempt to finish a thought, so after emergence the subject's mind will recall the beginning of the “rain" discussion and process the conclusion of the “rain" discussion . . . and many times, forget the session in between. Effectively “skipping" the entire event. This technique work's best when you also use post hypnotic instructions and commands.

2. Post-Hypnotic Instructions

Very simply, you can choose to give your subject the command to “forget". You can easily give them a post-hypnotic suggestion, or something they should follow unconsciously after the session. In this case, you can simply instruct them to “forget" upon waking. Used in conjunction with the “before and after", you can create a fairly entertaining state of amnesia in someone for a little while.

3. Conversational Hypnotic Amnesia

Using conversational hypnosis can be a little more difficult to create amnesia in a person, but the results can be almost instant. For example, imagine you are talking to a person that you know. Say an odd or confusing statement. Then immediately ask them, “Where do you work? I can't remember." Move your hand across in front of their eyes briefly as you say this creating confusion. This temporary confusion while embedding the command “I can't remember" can often cause temporary memory loss in a person. The mind is inherently narrowly during surprise and confusion, so this is a relatively simple technique you can use. Again, conversational hypnotists usually use this moment to their advantage as both the confusion and amnesia serve to preoccupy a person's critical mind, leaving you full access to the person's subconscious mind.

An induction can take 30 seconds to do, or 30 minutes, depending upon the talent of the subject and the skill of the hypnotist or MC. Hard-to-hypnotize clients need more time, while some very hypnotizable clients just sit in the chair and they're out. Since I tend to enjoy trance hijacking, which basically means I enjoy deepening conversational trances into hypnotic states by using confusion, overload, and association techniques. You can use an overload of instructions, terms, and elements to overload the conscious mind so that people who are not used to relaxing can stop over analyzing as well.

Imagine if you entered my office and I told you to close the door, then open the door, then open the window, then close the window, take the orange out of the refrigerator, put the orange in the stove, now turn around, look for a grapefruit and sit down. If I went on and on for four or five minutes giving you instructions and sprinkling in suggestions that made absolutely no sense, what would you do? Probably, stop trying to make sense out of them and give up. That's what happens when hypnotists use the confusion induction. Some clients are so rigid and analytic that the best way to induce hypnosis is to get them to stop thinking so much.

If you want to use a traditional method of creating amnesia or blanking someone there is always the Elman or the ten to one method. As you progress through the method you can have the subject test their eyes, then you test for muscle tension with their arm, and finally making a numbers on a blackboard in their mind disappear. Once those numbers disappear you can fractionate them by having them open and close their eyes giving the subject a command to write their name on the black board and then wipe it away. You instruct them that they can have their name back when you snap your fingers. Have them try to remember their name. Fractionate by opening and closing their eyes, and then have them write squiggles on the board and wipe them away. Simply ask them, "You can try and remember your name. I can't think of it. Can you tell me what it is?"

Test this out for yourself as their are many fun uses for this technique.
