Money behind the frontlines

Dear Ms. Maria Gavrilovic and Mr. Alex Ortiz:

Thank you for producing "A rare look inside hospitals battling coronavirus - 60 Minutes" It's important to understand what's going on within hospital walls and the heroic efforts of the healthcare workers that are tirelessly working around the clock to meet the demands of an ever evolving health crisis. But I wanted to reach out because this was the first time I've been disappointed by 60 Minutes reporting from one side of the story. Especially seeing Northwell CEO, Michael Dowling, as the face of our battle, speaking on behalf of doctors, when he is on the NYS Medicaid Redesign Team to recommend $2.5 billion in hospital budget cuts, and healthcare dollars are supplying the CEO bonuses and incentives.

There are numerous physician groups that are outraged as the healthcare system has been flatlining for years. The silent acceptance of physician burnout and suicides as an occupational hazard, and the injustices and struggles that doctors face to both advocate for and to shield our patients from, is common knowledge amongst us. We have been on the frontlines fighting for our patients protection in our call to service for years. But now it's not just a fight between doctors and hospital administrators. This is a fight between all health care workers and corporate medicine management, aka "leaders". The American people and taxpayers, our patients, now being transitioned to being "healthcare consumers", and we, have been diluted of our education, training and experience as physicians, now replaced with those with minimal training as "healthcare providers". All of this to create a transactional acceptance of an "a la carte" list of medical services instead of being a community for healing. It is clear that we have all been fleeced and now recklessly fallen victim to a broken system.

The soaring cost of healthcare in return for diminishing medical services, access and time with your doctors is because of at least three main areas in corporate medicine: Bonuses and incentives paid out to 1. Insurance companies 2. Pharmaceutical companies 3. Healthcare administrations.

All you have to do is follow the taxpayer money..

Healthcare and hospital management have spent decades exploiting the altruistic tendencies of physicians, nurses, and other healthcare workers for their own profit. Now they are putting those on the front line in harm's way, while threatening to punish those who dare to speak out. Doctors and nurses are being fired in the midst of this unprecedented public health crisis, simply for telling the truth.

Please consider this urgent matter, I believe such credible news sources like 60 minutes is the only hope the public has to really see the truth behind the hospital curtain.
