There is always a trend with those of us who shuffle around busy and yet aware of what we should be doing; we remark, "oh yeah I'm going to do that." When it comes to things that impact our health on a physical, mental, emotional or spiritual plane we are no different. Mainly we just don't know where to start and don't research because we think it will take too long. Of course there are those who procrastinate because they also don't think it'll work in the first place. But there is hope because meditation can be quick and easy plus you will see results immediately.

When you think of meditation, what comes to mind? Most likely a monk in a cloistered monastery sitting on the ground in the cross legged lotus position chanting a mantra. This is the very popular form of meditation but meditation can be even simpler. Have you ever done something you love and you were so relaxed and in the zone that everything else faded out? That is a form of meditation.

Make a list of your hobbies that bring you joy and that allow you to relax and enjoy yourself. Things that require little thinking that you do almost automatically now. Maybe it's gardening, knitting or even bird watching. Do those things and concentrate on the present moment. Be in the moment and of it.

“Be where you are; otherwise you will miss your life.” - Gautama Buddha

However, if we are looking at things to do, if you feel you don't have time for extra activities, how about breathing? Yes, just the simple act of breathing is the most basic beginner form of meditation.

  1. Sit comfortably any way you want.
  2. Close your eyes in as quiet a place as possible. Complete silence is not always possible.
  3. Just breathe! Concentrate on your chest rising, hear your breath coming in your nose and out through your mouth. How does it sound? How does it feel?

The last technique we will look at is walking meditation. We walk everyday but we are in such a hurry most of the time are we really mindful of the walking? Next time you walk, concentrate on every step. Feel your foot make contact with the Earth, feel how your legs are moving, look around you and take everything in. Are you starting to see a pattern of being in the now? It is all that exists and all that matters.

See, how simple was that? These are the simple starting techniques of meditation. If you feel you have done these and want to explore further, I urge you to research mantra chanting, different breathing techniques, etc. Or just stay tuned for my future articles. Blessings on you with your journey.
