We have all been affected by Covid-19 one way or another, it is a commonality among all people regardless of age, race, gender, or political affiliation. These times we are now living in will undoubtedly bring about stress to each one of us at one time or another. It will be helpful if we create some tools to help us cope with the pressure and strain this pandemic has created for us.

Add Some Fruits and Veggies to your Day

Early on in the pandemic you may have been stress eating, enjoying a little too much chocolate ice cream or finishing that whole container of Pringles. And that's ok, it's common for some to find comfort in food. While eating a row of Oreo's is comforting it's not the best way to combat stress. Instead of mowing down on cookies, chips, or ice cream try a fruit salad with grapes, strawberries, pineapples and blueberries. This will help with that sweet tooth and give you much needed vitamins and minerals that will help keep your immune system strong and healthy and also make you feel good for making a positive choice.

Step away from negative news stories and talk of Corona

I know it seems impossible at times to get away from all the madness and chaos this pandemic has brought but it's so important to take a break from upsetting news stories on social media and newscasts. Instead fill your mind with uplifting music, devotionals, or podcasts. Other things that will uplift your mood is watching a comedy, or creating a Tik Tok video with your teenager.

Get out in nature

According to an article by the University of Minnesota, (being in nature) "reduces anger, fear, and stress and increases pleasant feelings. Exposure to nature not only makes you feel better emotionally, it contributes to your physical well being, reduces blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones." I know I feel remarkably better when I spend time outside surrounded by beauty.

Stay Connected

Even though we must stay a safe distance from people it is still so important to stay connected with our friends and family. You can do this by phone, text, Zoom, or letter writing. You can also safely meet your family at the park for a picnic or a hike. Get creative. I've been having weekly Zoom calls with friends to stay connected and it's a lot of fun.

Do something creative and artsy

Something I love to do to keep my stress down is arts and crafts. There are so many different crafty things to choose from, drawing, painting, sculpting, beading, ceramics, pottery, crochet. You name it there's bound to be something that appeals to you. Don't worry about not being good enough you don't need to impress anyone just have fun and lose yourself in the task at hand. In Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association, titled “Reduction of Cortisol Levels and Participants’ Responses Following Art Making,” found that 45 minutes of creative activity significantly lessens stress in the body, regardless of artistic experience or talent.
