Dietitians say the best supplement for joint pain

Simple daily routines and activities like going for a stroll or carrying groceries can be made uncomfortable, if not impossible, by joint discomfort. Inactivity, osteoarthritis, past injuries, postural issues, or just wear and tear due to aging can all contribute to this aching, throbbing, or scorching discomfort. While there is no known cure for this type of pain, you can take a number of steps to manage and alleviate it. For one thing, trained dietitians say it's important to think about your nutrition, which can either increase or decrease inflammation.

According to Lindsey DeSoto, RDN, owner of The Dietitian Momma, "eating foods that promote bone health, decrease inflammation, and strengthen connective tissue will lessen joint discomfort and increase mobility."

Inflammation is the cause of joint pain. So, according to Trista Best, RD of Balance One Supplements, if your diet is high in things that cause inflammation, such as sugar, alcohol, or processed meals, it might exacerbate joint discomfort.

Certain anti-inflammatory meals, such as fish, olive oil, fruits, and vegetables, can, on the other hand, have the opposite effect. Supplements are an obvious approach to fill in any nutritional deficiencies in your diet. So, what's the best joint pain supplement?

Omega-3 fish oil, according to Jessica Mollet, RD, is a must-have for easing aches and pains. While foods including flax seeds, salmon, mackerel, herring, and walnuts provide omega-3 fatty acids, Mollet claims that many people do not obtain enough of these fats through food alone. Patients who took a daily omega-3 fish oil supplement for 75 days reported that their joint pain reduced, according to a 2006 study published in the journal Surgical Neurology International. A huge 80% stated they were pleased with the results, and a whooping 88 percent said they intend to continue taking fish oil.

Meanwhile, a 2007 study published in the journal Pain indicated that taking omega-3 fatty acid supplements reduced joint pain intensity, the number of problematic joints, and the number of minutes of morning stiffness in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.According to Jessica Mollet, RD, omega-3 fish oil is a must-have for reducing aches and pains. So, there you have it: a fish oil capsule a day just may keep the joint pain away. One last thing to keep in mind, though: while omega-3 fatty acids can be found in a variety of foods, it's important to note that the types found in fish oil—eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)—are known to be more beneficial than those found in plant sources.
