Vitamins and supplements are a huge business. It seems there is a pill for just about any nutrient your body might need. If you've been in a supplement store -or even a local pharmacy vitamin aisle- lately, then you know how overwhelming the selection can be. The abundance of supplements on the market leaves many people wondering if they are actually helpful, or if they are all just hype. While some manufacturers may make extraordinary claims, most supplements are genuinely designed to ensure your body gets the nutrients it needs -no matter how poor your diet is. In fact, they can be a crucial part of an overall healthy lifestyle by helping to promote wellness, slow aging processes and boosting energy levels. Here are seven ways that supplements can be used to aid your wellness routine.

Promoting Longevity

Some supplements are being touted as fountains of youth. While that may not be the exact case, there is reason to be hopeful. Products like Telogenesis work at a cellular level to help replenish telomerase and thwart cell damage. There is a growing body of research indicating that telomeres play an important role in cell regeneration and aging. Telomeres are like tiny protective caps on DNA molecules. They help protect and preserve genetic information, but they are reduced and shortened with every cell division. Since shorter telomeres are linked to memory loss and a host of other age-related conditions, it only makes sense that supporting them can help increase longevity.

Supporting Brain Function and Memory

Nootropics are supplements that help support brain health and cognitive function. For many, such as fish oils and caffeine, there is a long history of research to support their use as part of an overall healthy diet plan. As the population ages, there will be greater demand for nootropics and more research into effective options will likely be conducted.

Boosting Heart Health

So many chronic health conditions are associated with compromised heart function. Within those, many can be prevented with lifestyle adjustments. One of those changes includes increasing supplements that are linked to improved heart and circulatory health. In addition to a multivitamin, Omega 3 fatty acids, psyllium fiber and Coenzyme Q10 have shown to be beneficial.

Increasing Gut Flora

Probiotics and prebiotics have been getting a lot of press lately. They work together to populate the gut with beneficial bacteria. A healthy and balanced gut aids digestion, reduces inflammation and lowers risks associated with several chronic health conditions. It is best to get these items from your diet when possible/ Look for fruits and vegetables that are packed with prebiotic fiber and fermented foods containing live cultures for the best results. When that is not possible, supplements may also offer benefits.

Addressing Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies

The human body has basic minimum vitamin and mineral requirements. When you aren't able to meet those through diet alone, vitamins can help. Most people can safely include a multivitamin in their routine to avoid deficiencies. You can even choose from a selection that is designed for your age and gender.

Easing Anxiety

Stress is a normal part of life, but not everyone is equipped to handle it effectively. When occasional anxiety hits, a natural supplement can help soothe frayed nerves and promote relaxation. Natural alternatives to pharmaceuticals may help ease symptoms of mild or occasional anxiety, and several supplements are widely used for anxiety. They are not a replacement for professional intervention, particularly if you experience anxiety on a regular basis.

Aiding Sleep Patterns

Sleep is important to your overall health. Unfortunately, many people struggle to get the recommended amounts. There are a number of common sleep-promoting supplements that are widely regarded as safe. Chamomile and melatonin are two popular options. The first promotes relaxation while the latter alerts your body and mind that it is time for sleep.

Many people view supplements as hype or a marketing ploy. However, the right ones can complement a balanced diet by helping to fill nutritional gaps and address specific concerns. As research continues, you may see even more options on how to include them in a healthy lifestyle.
