Even if you're very conscientious about health and fitness, there are illnesses that can strike out of nowhere. For example, it's possible to suffer from a fatal form of insomnia as well as a condition that will cause you to lose weight without dieting or exercising. Yes, you read that correctly; lipidystrophy can cause you to lose a significant amount of weight without changing your lifestyle. Here are some bizarre conditions you've probably never heard of.

Stone Man Syndrome

While stone man syndrome isn't the medical term for this condition it does do a good job of describing it's effects. Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressive is a mutation that causes fibrous tissues to harden. Eventually, stone man syndrome sufferers will become frozen in place.

Water Allergy

Yes, it is possible to be allergic to water. This condition is known as aquagenic urticarial in the medical field and causes rashes that are painful and can last anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours after contact with water. Even sweat can cause a breakout if you suffer from this allergy.

Alien Hand Syndrome

Alien hand syndrome causes you to lose control over one or both of your hands. You may end up doing things that you aren't conscious of. While this may come in handy if you want to deny eating a whole bag of cookies, it certainly has the potential for negative outcomes. Imagine you're in your kitchen cooking dinner and reach for a spoon but your arm doesn't obey your command. Instead, you unconsciously grab a knife and almost cut your fingers off. Alien hand syndrome should definitely be taken seriously despite it's comical name.

Spatial Orientation Phenomenon

This very rare anomaly causes those affected by it to view the world upside down. In order to get through life with spatial orientation phenomenon, even your television will need to be displayed upside down. Imagine how weird it must be to look in a mirror and see yourself upside down!

Fatal Familial Insomnia

While almost everyone suffers from a simple bout of insomnia at some point in their lives, some people have a more serious form called fatal familial insomnia. Those that suffer from this will eventually die from it. It's passed on genetically and causes memory loss and confusion. While the occasional all-nighter can be fun, for anyone affected by fatal familial insomnia it can have much greater consequences.

Lipodystrophy

While lipodystrophy sufferers won't wake up 20 pounds lighter overnight, this condition does cause rapid weight loss. Don't get excited just yet; this weight loss generally causes symptoms ranging from sunken in eyes to very visible arm and leg veins. Lipodystrophy is often developed after an HIV diagnosis. On the surface, a condition that causes weight loss sounds like a dream come true, but if you look closer, you'll learn that lipodystrophy is a nightmare.

Auto Brewery Syndrome

If you've ever dreamed of getting drunk by eating your morning muffin, you're in luck. Auto brewery syndrome causes it's sufferers to get drunk off of carbohydrates. If you think this sounds fun, imagine waking up hungover every morning. The novelty of auto brewery syndrome would surely wear off quickly.

The next time someone mentions an unusual medical symptom, think about this list. It just might be true. After all, if it's possible to be allergic to an element that makes up over half of the human body, what isn't possible?
