If you are like many others, you wait impatiently through cold winters and rainy springs for the warmth and relaxation of summer. This year, summer brings many challenges you probably haven't faced before. That doesn't mean it should be scrapped as a total loss. In fact, you have more reasons than ever before to improve your health and wellness this summer. Luckily, no matter how challenging the circumstances are, there are some simple things you can do every day to give your overall health a boost.

1. Wear Sunscreen

More than just a covering for what's important inside, your skin is the largest organ of your body and it plays important roles in your health and wellness. Applying sunscreen before you head outdoors is a simple yet powerful way to protect it from too much UV exposure. Not all products are made the same. You can opt for UV-protective clothing that is lightweight and moisture-wicking. Hats can help keep the sun's rays off the delicate skin of your face. And then there are the many lotions, sprays, creams and sticks that can be applied directly to your skin. If you are using a topical sunblock product, look for one that:

- Is suitable for sensitive skin

- Offers water and sweat resistance

- Provides broad-spectrum protection

- Has an SPF factor of at least 30

If you have spent extra time outdoors without sunscreen protection, then you know how much damage the sun can do to your skin. Premature aging of your skin that results from UV damage can leave it lacking moisture and volume. A good dermal repair complex can restore some of the youthfulness to the skin by helping it heal from the inside out.

2. Stay Hydrated

In general, adults need between 100 and 120 ounces of fluid per day for optimal function. Certain factors, like excessive sweating or high temperatures, can increase that amount. Since you are likely you encounter those conditions in the summer, it is more important than ever that you stay hydrated. Consider carrying a refillable bottle as you go about your day. It serves as a reminder to keep sipping as well as a convenient way to keep track of how much water you are drinking.

3. Keep Moving

The dog days of summer don't exactly inspire you to get out and move, but your health will definitely benefit if you do. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise on most days of the week to achieve overall health and wellness. It will also help you maintain a healthy weight, which is linked to lower rates of many negative health conditions and chronic diseases.

4. Stay Connected

Social connections are vital to your emotional wellbeing. Even if it is more difficult than normal this year, make the effort to stay in touch and connect to those around you. Schedule time to sit and talk with friends, visit a farmers market or outdoor art exhibit, or invite a few people out for a picnic at a local park. The simple act of sharing yourself with others can help improve your mood, reduce your stress and give your immune system a boost.

5. Go Outside

The summer heat tends to keep people inside, but it doesn't have to. For most folks, a little time outside can be a safe part of the day if a little preventative action -and common sense- is used. Plys, there are so many awesome benefits associated with nature that your health and wellness will see a boost. A few of the perks you can expect to generate include:

- Stronger immune system

- Extra vitamin D production

- Reduced stress

- Happier moods

The summer has long been associated with carefree and relaxed days, gatherings with friends and family and a general feeling of fun. Things may be a little different this year, but that doesn't mean you should forgo that relaxed and laid back atmosphere. Instead, add healthy lifestyle behaviors like exercising, staying hydrated, spending time outside and getting plenty of sleep. You should also take precautions to ensure safety with things like sunscreen and UV blocking sunglasses. Combined, these will help you give your health and wellness a boost this summer.
