The M word: meditation. We have all heard of it before. Maybe you heard Dr. Phil or an internet guru talking about its benefits and how it could change your life. Maybe you have had some interest in it but no time to invest into learning about it and grabbing the “gear.” Welp I have been there and resonate with your pain. Like you, I thought meditation was some holistic skill I wasn’t capable of doing. I was this way for a very long time until I discovered a YouTube video that quite honestly changed my life. This video gave me the insight I needed to start meditation. This led me to take the leap into the rabbit hole we call “Self-Care.” I learned a lot in that rabbit hole, but this blog is not about the rabbit hole, but actually about how to prep yourself for that jump in. These 3 easy steps I have listed below are what personally helped me and millions to get started in their meditation journey to a healthier lifestyle.

Step 1: Find a quiet place and bring a timer

The first step to getting started with meditation is to find the area you are going to meditate in and the length of time you will stay there. No one likes to waste time, and to the untrained eyes and mind, meditation can be a waste. So, to make your lives easy and to save your time, I recommend taking 5 mins out of your day to sit in the quiet place with your timer.

Step 2: Close your eyes for a set duration of time and DON’T OPEN THEM

This is the most critical part to your meditation routine. You have to make sure that you close your eyes and keep them closed for whatever period of time you have committed to. Your meditative state stops when you open your eyes. For example, if you chose to meditate for 5 min, your goal is to just sit there for 5 min with your eyes close. Simple right? There is more to this, but I wanted to keep it as simple as possible so you could get started. So, one more time, sit and keep those peepers closed.

Step 3: Focus on breathing

So, you may be asking yourself, “What do I focus on when my eyes are closed?" Simple, you focus on your breathing. You literally just think about air in and air out, just focus on that. Let’s break it down: so you’re meditating for 5 min and your eyes are closed, but you are having all these random thoughts and weird stuff pop into your brain. That’s normal, this is supposed to happen because what you are doing is spending time with yourself and this is what you think about. So instead of thinking about all those things, just focus on your breathing. You will find that the thoughts you have start to evaporate, but somehow, you’re still mindful of them. This is called mindfulness meditation, but that’s a different blog for a different time.

Extra: Practice for 7 Days

This is an extra step for you all and that is to practice the simple mediation steps above daily for a week. I promise you, you will see results in your mental health, physical health, and spiritual health. I understand it can be a bit difficult to find the time for things like this. But just give it 5 mins, preferably in the morning before your day gets started.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this blog was to help you get started with meditation. I touched on some other in-depth topics about meditation, but I will make a blog addressing those. In summary, all you need to do to get started with meditation is to find a quiet place, bring a timer, close your eyes, focus on your breathing, and repeat. I can guarantee you will see improvements in yourself if you take the simple steps forward to enlightenment and mindfulness. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this blog.
