Detox every season. Better out than in.

Anyone and everyone will benefit from detoxification. It has direct benefits for conditions that many people deal with, from body odor to acne to weight loss. It also reduces inflammation, which is the root cause of most diseases, from arthritis to autoimmune issues.

1. Inversion

Inversion has many beneficial effects on the body. With only 20 or 30 minutes of time, you can help tone your intestinal organs by breathing deeply in an inverted position. Your body is capable of being inverted in any position. An inversion position counts as any position where the head is below the heart.

Add to the effect by moving your legs in a bicycle fashion. Inversion reverses the flow of blood in the body and has beneficial effects such as enhancing your circulation and boosting immunity. You can activate your parasympathetic nervous system this way. The result is a reduction in anxiety. Inversion also lowers blood pressure. It is beneficial to your lymphatic system causing lymph to move so that excess lymph can be collected and direct lymph flow to the heart.

Inversion can be defined as any position where your heart is above your brain. This can be achieved through yoga positions, an inversion table, or inversion boots. You can invert yourself without using any tools by placing your palms and feet flat on the ground while lifting your hips in the air. This should result in a triangle position or downward facing dog.

If you want to maintain and increase strength you can try a full handstand or Adho Mukha Vrksasana. Inverting your body can alleviate your back pain and improve your overall posture. People who have a great deal of muscle tension or exercise frequently will benefit more from gravity pulling on the muscles and soft tissue. Inversion has a number of immediate benefits:

  • More energy
  • Enhanced blood circulation throughout the entire body
  • Strengthened arms, shoulders, and wrists
  • A calmer, more relaxed brain
  • Greater sense of balance
  • Helps alleviate stress

2. Dry Brushing

Dry brushing helps you detox and also reduces the appearance of cellulite because it breaks down deposits of fat underneath your skin. Dry brushing stimulates your sweat glands and oil glands. It also has a stimulating and toning effect on your muscles; it promotes elimination and circulation. In order to dry brush, start at the feet and always brush towards the heart, this movement is essential to making the detox process work. Doing this before stepping into a sauna enhances the effect of your sauna sessions by accelerating detoxification and sweating. It also enhances the function of your kidneys and digestion

Get separate brushes for your face and body. Brush your legs, stomach, arms, and back. When your face has been dry brushed regularly, you may notice a reduction in pore size. Start at your feet and brush your bare skin towards your heart area in small circular motions. Be sure to glide the brush along your skin with adequate pressure while being gentle with yourself. This practice stimulates the flow of lymph which is important since there are no “pumps” in this system to flush toxins. Your lymphatic system depends upon movements such as jumping and bending to guide toxins out of the body.

Exfoliation is an added benefit of dry skin brushing, helping to remove the buildup of dead skin cells. When brushing, start with soft pressure and then work your way to a firmer pressure. Focus on making smooth, patterned strokes across your skin, not scrubbing.

3. Detox Bath

With the right ingredients, a bath can do much more than just clean you externally. Add Himalayan sea salt or regular sea salt to your bath along with baking soda, apple cider vinegar, and essential oils. There are quite a few quality salts to choose from, select one without fragrance. The scents are often made with chemicals which are unnecessary to your bath. If you enjoy a pleasant smell while you bathe, try a 100% pure essential oil or burn natural wax candles. Dissolve all of the ingredients before adding it to your bath or while running bath water.

This bath will increase your magnesium levels. To make your detoxification more powerful, add a natural clay such as rhassoul clay, french green clay, or bentonite clay. Natural clay attracts toxins like a magnet. Make sure the clay is well dissolved before you add it and never use a metal spoon or container. If you use metal, the toxins within the metal will be drawn into the clay, defeating the purpose. Clay has been used for thousands of years for its healing purposes. Rhassoul clay and bentonite clay are two mineral-rich, healing substances to bathe in.

All of the above detoxification can be done daily to receive the benefits. Doing these activities has a compound effect over time and helps push toxins out of the body on a regular basis.
