Slowly, step by step, we’re making progress towards an eco-friendlier world. More and more people are changing their day-to-day habits and choices by striving to reduce their carbon footprint.

If you’re one of those people then you probably know all about how to save money and energy, how to recycle, how to buy eco-friendly products, how to use bicycles over cars. But more ways are becoming available every day.

One of those ways includes vertical gardens. Living green walls or vertical gardens are nothing new by any means but are slowly becoming very popular ways to preserve our environment.

Vertical gardens are architectural elements that are often found on the exterior or interior walls of buildings and homes. They come in many sizes and are a great way to incorporate greenery and plants where there is a lack of space for actual gardens.

However, the benefits of vertical gardens are many. Keep scrolling on to discover all the environmental benefits of vertical gardens.

Vertical gardens improve air quality

One of the greatest environmental benefits of vertical gardens is better air quality. Vertical gardens improve air quality both indoors and outdoors.

Plants are natural air purifiers and they act as natural air filters. They remove harmful volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde, benzene, methylene chloride from the air. Apart from that, they replace the carbon dioxide from the air with oxygen making the air we breathe much cleaner. That’s why having a vertical garden means having a natural air filter.

Vertical gardens save water

Living a sustainable way of life means saving water whenever and wherever we can. The good thing about vertical gardens is their ability to manage water. The watering of vertical gardens is easily done with a hydroponic system.

Hydroponic systems use at least ten times less water than traditional watering methods. This system allows plants to grow without soil. Instead of soil, plants are grown with the use of mineral nutrient solutions.

Additionally, these systems collect and reuse wastewater instead of letting it drain into the environment. Basically, all the water is used by the plants and there is not much waste really.

Your vertical garden will always be green and fresh without wasting unnecessary water.

Vertical gardens can reduce the UHI effect

Many urban areas suffer from the UHI effect (urban heat island effect). This means that the temperature in cities and metropolitan areas is significantly higher than in surrounding rural areas. The UHI effect is created due to human effects.

Vertical gardens can be used to absorb the heat in the air, and in that way reduce the temperature and provide healthier air quality in cities and other urban areas.

Vertical gardens don’t have many pests and other problems

Not having to use pesticides and other chemicals significantly improve the environment. And that’s exactly what you can achieve with vertical gardens. Since the garden is placed vertically on the wall, very few pests will be able to get to it.

Apart from that, another benefit of the vertical position of the garden is that it allows better flow of the air and plenty of sunshine. Enough air and sunshine mean no fear of fungus, mildew, and other diseases.

Vertical gardens reduce the ambient temperature

In addition to being natural air filters, vertical gardens are also great insulators. Plants in the vertical garden absorb sunlight and the structure of the garden creates a barrier that the sun can’t get through. This is how vertical gardens reduce the inside temperature.

During summertime, with vertical gardens, ambient temperature can be reduced at least 7 degrees. Apart from temperature, green walls reduce the reflective light and heat as well.

With vertical gardens, you don’t have to use air conditioning as much thus reducing the emission of greenhouse gases. Additionally, you would be reducing your electricity bills as well.

Vertical gardens reduce noise

Just like green walls can create barriers that sunlight can’t penetrate, they can also create a sound barrier. Vertical gardens are known to reduce noise by at least 40% than regular facades.

This natural soundproofing barrier can make the environment, both indoors and outdoors much quieter and more pleasant.

Vertical gardens increase biodiversity

Green walls can attract birds and insects and in that way increase biodiversity. Vertical gardens are great places for habitats, which can in time compensate for the loss of biodiversity due to the urbanization of cities. A wide variety of life means that the ecosystem is healthy and that’s what we need to strive for in all urban places.

Vertical gardens create sustainable food sources

Vertical gardens can create farming opportunities in an urban environment. You can grow small fruit and vegetables, as well as herbs, in vertical gardens.

This way vertical gardens are used to create sustainable and locally produced food products.

No longer are vertical gardens used only as aesthetically pleasing architectural elements. Today, there are far more important reasons why we should give vertical gardening a try. Vertical gardens can significantly improve the environment, especially the environment in urban settings.
