Jan opened up the newspaper to her horror and dismay and read about the Ukraine invasion. As she read on she also read about the mask mandate protests in the U.S. and Canada. Jan couldn’t help to think about the bad news overall in the world.

Jan couldn’t help but feel disgusted for the U.S. and Canadian protests because she didn’t see these protests as legitimate protests. The mask mandate protests were seen as a protest against the inconvenience and not a real protest for change. Jan saw all other protests as insignificant compared to what was happening in Ukraine. People in the U.S. and Canada protest because they are being inconvenienced by a mask mandate but Ukraine is fighting for their very existence. The fact that a giant like Russia is invading Ukraine as the world helplessly watches seems surreal to Jan. So many people have died in Ukraine as the Ukrainians fight back to defend their homeland from Russian invasion.

It’s like the fight against David and Goliath. David being Ukraine and Goliath being Russia. Hopefully, David will beat Goliath even though it's wishful thinking. The cities of Ukraine have been decimated and destroyed by missiles and artillery fire. The Russians unprovoked have attacked another sovereign nation in hopes of installing a puppet government that serves Russia. The Ukrainians will fight until the end to not lose their freedoms. The Ukrainians have been displaced with more than 2 million Ukrainians fleeing. Ukrainians have fled to neighboring Poland, Moldova, and Hungary as refugees escaping the bombing of Ukraine.

There are so many innocent civilians being killed by direct missile strikes that appear to be targeting civilians. Why isn’t Putin being trialed as a war criminal? The World fears Putin being backed into a corner that they fear he will use nuclear weapons on Ukraine and Europe. If the world doesn’t stop Putin he will not stop at Ukraine. Putin will continue to take more lands that are not associated with NATO. The Russians will not stop in Ukraine he will try to take as much land as he can. The Ukrainians have been very brave as they fight against a tyrant that only knows absolute power. Vladimir Putin doesn’t care that he destroys cities and kills innocent victims he only wants to crush Ukraine. Because the Ukrainians have made Russia look bad by being able to hold off their offensive and fight back against Russia. The Russian convoy has been halted and appears to be stuck outside of Kyiv. As Americans fight insignificant protests on causes like mask mandates or school board member replacements. The Ukrainians are fighting for liberty, freedom, and justice. They don’t want to be annexed to Russia which is returning to its cold war ideology under Putin. In Russia, there is no such thing as a free press for years Russia had journalists killed. Now, they passed a law that would trial anyone who spoke of the war as an invasion, 15 years in jail if they speak against the war. Russians have to fight back against their government if they want their rights back. Although Russian democracy has only been around since 1989, it was an experiment that lasted until Putin came to power on May 7, 2000. In 1993, Russia was declared a democracy federative, a law-based state with a Republic form of government. State power is divided into three branches legislative, executive, and judicial like the USA. But Putin has slowly changed the institutions by making the executive branch strongest overriding the other two branches of government. Putin has turned autocratic dictator meanwhile Zelensky president of Ukraine and a former comedian has risen as a national hero to Ukraine and the rest of the World. As he fights on Putin and refuses to leave.

Jan admires President Zelensky as he stands up against Russian aggression and tries to rally worldwide support for Ukraine. Although, Zelensky has tried to get more countries to directly intervene by not getting airplanes from Poland. And it's not Zelensky’s fault it’s just that the World doesn’t want a world war III scenario in which Russia is goating countries to enter into war.

Jan believes that the Russians want World War III to use nuclear weapons against their enemies. Putin is already accusing the Ukrainians of creating a dirty bomb so he can justify using nuclear weapons against Ukrainians.

If Putin uses a nuclear weapon against Ukraine will the World allow this? Will they leave Putin unaccounted for? Putin seems emboldened as he continues his campaign against Ukraine. Putin knows the West is afraid of him and what he is capable of. He knows that the fear is what holds the West from doing more to help Ukraine. The World has calculated that they will let Ukraine fall into the hands of Russia to avoid a third World war. But at what cost is the World willing to let Putin destroy another sovereign nation.

Jan is disappointed at the West although they are avoiding a third world War. How long will they allow Russia to show aggression towards its neighbors? It seems that history will repeat itself as Hitler took over neighboring countries in Europe in the 1930s. No-one stopped his aggression until it was too late. In our bid to prevent another World War III are we appeasing a dictator that has no end in sight? How many innocent people have to die before the West does anything to really fight?

Awhile the West fight fake protests and stupid wars on mandates, The Ukrainians are really fighting for freedom and for their right to exist.

All we can do is pray for the people of Ukraine, may their invasion end without much more bloodshed. May the Ukrainians fight for freedom and independence keep them all safe and unharmed. May the world learn of the Ukrainian's resolve and resistance as an example of a truly free nation.
