The Side Hustle I Thought Would Change My Life and Why I Quit

Here We Go Again

Several of you seemed to like the first installment talking about this topic, so I figured why not go for part two? Like I said in the first one, the hardest part of writing that one was choosing which instance to write about… yes, there are a whole lot of them.

In this second part I will talk about another side hustle I thought would change my life, and why I quit. What is it? You’re looking at it. Yes, when I started, I thought that being a writer on Vocal Media and Medium would change my life. At the very least, I thought for sure that I would become a full-time writer and make my income from posting on these two platforms.

Now, to address the elephant in the room… I obviously didn’t quit writing and posting on the platforms, after all… hello? You’re reading this, right? In this instance, what I did quit was thinking that I would soon make a living from doing it as well as quitting thinking that it would change my life. Honestly, I don’t even make that much on either platform. I am able to cash out on Medium once every month or so, and on Vocal Media I cash out around once every two weeks or so. Sad, considering the cash out is only $20 for me on both platforms.

To be fair, if I posted every day or maybe even multiple times each day, I am sure I would make more. However, I have to find ways to make money and plan for the future, as well try to live some kind of life… so that doesn’t allow for much writing time on platforms that don’t really pay me out much. I’m not complaining or whining about it… it’s just the facts and the reality of how it is. Now that I have lost my full-time job recently, this factor becomes even more pressing.

The job loss is a long story and maybe if enough people are interested in knowing it, I’ll write another post on that. Just let me know.

Why I Still Do Write and Post

So, all this being the case and all things considered, you may be wondering why I do still write and post on both Vocal Media and Medium. Well, the answer is actually a really simple one. It can be broken down into two simple facts:

1. I enjoy writing and always have.

2. I do still make a little bit of money from it, and every little bit helps.

The truth is, I’ve enjoyed writing pretty much my whole life. I like informing people or entertaining people with the knowledge or just strange stuff that is in my head. I spent years as a copywriter as well as a fiction writer, all because I loved writing so much. After a while, I got tired of copywriting because it is basically just written manipulation. I enjoy writing… I don’t enjoy manipulating people in any way.

Series or Not?

As I’ve said a few times now, this is just another example of several that I could tell you about…and in some cases, warn you about. That being said, if you would like me to make this a series where I tell you about each individual one, just let me know by putting a comment under this post. I’m happy to do it, but I don’t want to write all those posts if none of you want to know about them. Let me know in the comments and I’ll be sure to do that. I can tell you about concepts that didn’t work out, concepts that almost worked out, platforms that totally failed and a few instances where it may have worked out if my life hadn’t gotten in the way.
